Hi all, I’ve been trying to stick to a low carb diet, recommend by two of my GP’s I’m so confused, my family say I have to calculate grams of food or it could be very dangerous, I’m really trying, and think I’m doing very well, I’m eating plenty of veg & salad plus healthy fats. I feeling scared now to carry on. Help x

Welcome to the forum? What sort of healy fats, and approximatey how many carbs do you eat in a day?

Thankyou. Well that is the point I’m not counting anything, I’m just cutting out carbs, eating plenty of veg & salad also healthy fats. I don’t know what to do to calculate anything, I don’t know were to start.

Hi and welcome

A set of scales and a familiarity with the supermarket that you use most website would probably help a lot here.

Just look up the carbohydrate value of the food you are eating (preferably raw) then multiply it by the weight pre cooking.

I record mine in a spreadsheet but a sheet of paper will work just as well.

Interested to know why your family think it will be dangerous?

Ok. When we start low carbing, we have to find what level of carbs suit us. My hba1c was very high so I went keto, less than 20g per day.

If you are looking at a packet look at the carbohydrates. I wouldn't touch anything higher than 10g per hundred.

Low carb is not dangerous, some of us have been doing it for years.

Don't eat low fat anything. Or fruit except for berries.

Hi Paula, what type are you first of all and are you on any medication? x

I think you needn't weigh anything you eat. What is at stake is eating the right food, real food. Cut down carbs as much as possible, nothing bad will happen to you. If you are on medication, then you should be careful and ask for professional assistance. What I do is this: very little carbs, moderate protein (animal- & plant-based), plenty of fats (olive oil, tallow, olives, butter, red meat, etc). I don't consume vegetable oils, margarine, etc.

If you are trying to lower your blood glucose you should try to stick to a certain number of carbs. You should also use a glucose meter to check your blood before you eat and two hours after the first bite.

Hi. Low-carbing is not dangerous so don't let anyone tell you that. You don't need to weigh anything; just look at package contents and look for total carbs. Ignore traffic light labelling and look at the back of packs. Set yourself a daily total target of carbs to stay within; 150gm/day might be a good start point.

Everyone has to find their own way.
I don’t count carbs.
I cut out potatoes, Anything grain based, fruit, except raspberries, and the rare time I buy something in a packet it has to be less then 10% carbs.
I have a glucose meter and started testing. Anything that pushed up my BG more then 2, I cut out.
I lost 60 pounds with out increasing my exercise and have kept my A1C below 40 for three years.
