Low carb insulin type

Hi so I’m on a low carb diet, eating around 60-70 carbs a day. I’m currently taking fast acting insulin, my insulin is too fast acting to counter proteins turning into glucose. The NHS doesn’t prescribe intermediate insulin but do prescribe short acting insulin. Do you think short acting insulin will make more of a difference than fast acting? And if so, would you recommend humilin s or Actra rapid short acting insulin?

Any help would be appreciated!

Hi, are you only on 1 type of insulin at the moment? I'm on 2 - slow acting and fast acting. The slow acting keeps blood sugars stable without food and fast acting deals with meals.
 
I'm on a keto diet (<30 grams of carbs a day) and use fast acting (Fiasp) and long acting (Levemir) insulins successfully. Intermediate insulins are not necessary if you split your fast acting doses.

If the insulin you are taking works too fast, why don't you take it later?
Depending upon what I eat and what my BG level is, I often take my insulin after eating or split it.

I am not a doctor but would not expect short acting to solve your problem as it lasts at least 12 hours and has a steady profile during that time with no peak.
 
I have eaten keto, ketovore and carnivore and the short acting (known as Regular insulin) works great for bolusing for meat. I'm on Hypurin Porcine Neutral which has a duration of 5 hours and this covers brilliantly the digesting of meat. I don't have personal experience with the two insulins you mention but they probably have a similar profile. I also use Humalog to make corrections or for things like eggs which digest within three hours. The alternative is to split your dose eg. inject fast acting to cover the veggies and then a couple of hours later, inject to cover the meat. It can be done but it's easier just to do the one injection of a Regular insulin. If you are able to get an additional insulin prescribed, then I would do so and see what you think. I have been told that it is uncommon to be allowed 2 different bolus insulins but if they let you then great.
