Low Carb Low Calorie Diet

Well I would say after doing it for nearly two years at about 50 gm carbs and between 600 and 800 calories a day it worked for me but would like some of the muscle I lost back and I would not now do it again.

If you decide to do such a thing be very careful about muscle loss and make sure you have the right amount of protein and maybe look into supplements it can give you very low energy levels.

It is not for the feint hearted thats for sure.

Personally I found low calorie both hard and eventually ineffective after many years of "dieting".
I found I got far better blood sugar control and lost lots of weight by a combination of intermittent fasting (skipping breakfast) and eating ultra low carb. In my initial weight loss period I dropped about 84 pounds without counting a single calorie.

Just wondered what you guys would say is low cal and how low carb?
https://www.diabetes.co.uk/diet/low-carb-diabetes-diet.html here is the website definition of low carb

the amount of calories you need depends on your age, height, weight and life style.

I have a blood glucose meter and test my levels before and two hours after a meal. if the difference between the two figures is more than 2 points, I know I need to have fewer of those particular carbs at any one meal.

we are all different.

During the first 6 months or so after diagnosis, I generally ate lean(ish) protein and either salad or green vegetables.

I've no idea what the calorie or carbohydrate amounts I was consuming, as I can't be bothered to count, but at a guess it was probably 1,000 kcals or less, and 30g or less.

Lost a lot of weight, and improved my BG and overall health, without ever really being hungry.

Probably the thought of the complications of T2D concentrated the mind.

At the moment i am not eat much carbs and have stopped sugar.
And even though the week is not out i have lost 4lbs in 4 days,..however had a bad day yesterday lol, but back on it today just eating fish, steak, veg etc but cut back on eggs as they started to give me gut rot

Why are you interested in calories?
Because there are people on here following LCLC diets
And i think the Newcastle diet is designed for T2 diabetes at 800cal a day.
But also just curious as i think Bulkbiker only has 1 meal aday and he too has reversed his diabeties.

Low calorie must surely mean anything less than RMR (Resting Metabolic Rate - what's needed to stay alive without doing any moving, like in a coma) or even BMR (Basic Metabolic Rate - what's needed when taking into account just moving about, and also exercising). As Lucylocket says the amount of calories you need depends on your age, height, weight and life style, and I'd add gender as well. See Harris Benedict formula.

Some people seem to get away without counting calories but I think the majority of us are much more sensitive to a change in calorie consumption, both more or less than required.

I think the 800 calories that the Newcastle Diet prescribes is termed as Very Low Calorie.

As for carbs, I'd suggest the same thing. Anything less than the approximate recommended 200gms is low. Personally I stick to less than 50gms per day, but other type IIs can tolerate more and some less. Try not to worry about whether somebody calls is low, see what's best for you. Who said "what's in a name"? Juliet in the Shakespeare play.

Yes sometimes only 1 meal a day (at the moment) however that meal is quite a large one... so I'm not really limiting calories.. last night it was half a large chicken and some pork ribs.

Are u off meds?
Were taking meds or did u go it alone.
My doc thinks my diabetes is all sugar which i know is not true.
I cant have to much (if any )carbs like porridge, bread, not sure about potatoes as this would spike my bgs.
Were sugar dosent as much.
Anyway im doing a low carb no sugar to loose a bit of weight and get my bgs under control.
Do u still test?
How is your insulin levels?

I took metformin for 3 weeks in November 2015 as I could hardly leave the house I stopped taking it (my own decision).
Since then I have taken no medication for anything whatsoever.
The only way to find out the foods that spike your blood sugar is to eat something preferably on its own testing before and 2 hours after what you have eaten. Or an alternative strategy would be to only eat things that are pretty unlikely to spike your blood sugar.
The way of eating I have followed for most of the past 2 years and 8 months since diagnosis was ketogenic so fewer than 20g of carbs per day and is composed of meat, fish, eggs, along with one green veg or salad. Desserts are Oppo ice cream with extra double cream or some frozen raspberries with greek yoghurt and double cream. I also have cream in coffee, lactofree milk in tea and eat cheese quite a bit. Most things are either cooked in their own fat or butter.
Sometimes I'll have some very high cocoa content chocolate too.
The last month or so I have been cutting back on the green stuff and having mainly meat and fish and eggs with cheese for dessert although I did get some Oppo .
I test every day when I get up and then usually mid afternoon (if I remember) and in the evening after eating usually 2-3 hours after the meal. Usually between 5 and 6 unless fasting which is when it can go a lot lower (mid 3's).
Insulin levels have been tested privately twice 21 August 2017 3.41 18 Oct 2017 7.85 probably about time I got them done again along with a full blood panel and HbA1c.

There you go .. my food life in one post...

Edit to add I record calories but don't really "limit " them my average for 2018 has been 2200 cal per day but that has included 2 weeks of deliberate fasting

Hahah cheers
Yep i know what spikes mine but i also know what brings it down quicker.
I know my bgs would spike +5mmol so if i was 8 first thing my bgs would go up to 13.
And if im at 13mmol and i eat porridge etc then up +5
At mo im working out more and everything seem so simple when u get it lol

Like ..."Carbs turn to sugar, sugar turns to fat"
So now im trying to pack on more muscle as well as "Muscle burns fat"

How long did it take u to bring your bgs under control?

I was getting 5-6's within 3 months of ultra low carbing skipping breakfast every day.

So were u getting spikes before u got under control?
I went low carb as soon as I was diagnosed having found this forum about 2 weeks before the blood test ( I was expecting the diagnosis). That was in October 2015. My meter didn't arrive until mid november so I only have data from then. I wasn't "spiking" but my blood sugars were in the 7's and 8's then got down to the 5 and 6's after about 3 months. My first ever FBG from 23 Nov 2015 was 7.0 that night I had a curry (maybe with a bit of rice as I was a newby) and it went up to 9.1. I started doing extended fasts in Jan 2016 before going on holiday to Miami and I got down to the 5's then. Still have had the odd spike when experimenting with food but nothing more than 7.5 since those days.

Wow
I think when i was diagnosed i have a bowel of porridge and honey and a cuppa tea with 3 sugars and my bloods were 18.5mmol I
After xmas 2017 i wad on and off drugs and over indulging over xmas pushed my bgs up to 22mmol.
I think the main thing for me is to get this weight off and see how i am.

Hi @steveis36 I don't count calories just follow LCHF. I fast 18/6 and I'm on 5% or less carbs per day. Carbs are very low but I started on 20% per day and then reduced. I have to eat at least twice a day as I'm still on meds (hope to be off them soon) I've lost 2 1/2 stone in two months and fetched my Blood glucose down from 16.6 to 4.9 average over 30 days. We are all different but I find this way of eating very easy and I'm not hungry at all. Good luck with which ever path you take. :)
