Low Carb pitfalls Newbies might fall into...

Going to low with carbs makes me loose weight that I don't need to loose. I was never overweight but.just cutting out all sugar stuff bread and potatoes I lost over a stone in a very short time. Now I do eat all vegetables including new potatoes and some fruits and I have Burgen bread usually as toast with breakfast I eat a lot of nuts including peanuts and they seem to keep my weight stable. I would still like to regain the weight I lost but at least I don't loose any more now

I guess as a diet only prediabetic you can get away with eating your level of carbs, I know I couldn't.
how most people on low carb stop losing weight is to replace the lost carbs with fats and a bit more protein.
my fitness pal is a good program to keep your total intake in range.

It is hard though Jack. I reached my desired weight a few months ago. I upped my fat calories quite a bit but still lost the odd pound here and there. Then these odd pounds kept coming off, slowly, but very surely. I have had to up my fats yet again, and again, but can't put weight back on. I use MFP daily, I also keep a strict food diary on Excel and calorie count as well as carb/protein/fat count. It really is a difficult balance to achieve and hard work. Much harder than it was to lose the weight in the first place. I hope I am getting there now, but it has taken a lot of hard work. I was determined not to increase my carbs, and I haven't.

putting on weight can be hard..after having the proper amount of fats [something a lot of people have trouble with] bernstein said that protein increases weight, the LCHF people say 20%E of protein which is 100g per 2,000 cal diet [I eat 60-70g]

For me it's not the cravings that bother me, it's the temptation from all the carb laden foods the OH buys. I have told her but it's like she don't believe me, still tomorrow is my 1st of 2 healthy living for T2 so once she sees how important it is not to have the carb laden stuff cause of what it can do things my change, but on the other hand, if this course is behind the times which I expect it is, then nothing is going to change, I'll just have to resist the temptation which is hard as hell. Hayho.

I'm starting to buy Mrs B carby stuff just for her and the food cupboard is gradually getting a His'n'Hers look. Honestly the only thing I miss is toast.

Mmmmm toast! I miss that sometimes and I made flapjack for the kiddies & didn't touch it - that was v hard! I miss a nice big pink lady - ooh er. Right now havin some lovely kp salted nuts!

To prevent me from caving into carb cravings throughout the day, I was thinking of taking a jar of peanut butter with me and having a teaspoon of it between every hour or 2. What do you think?

For me, it is being around other people eating carbs and having to be 'different' that bothers me. For example at a restaurant or meal at a friend's house. There they are chomping away on their roast potatoes, puddings etc and I just feel left out. I think this harks back to childhood, before I was a diabetic. I was an overweight child and so my parents would do things like tell my brothers they could have sweets but not me, or my mum told the school I wasn't allowed puddings anymore and the humiliation of being told that in the dinner queue in front of the other kids has never left me (thanks mum). And this was all back when I had a functioning pancreas and wasn't even diabetic. I guess those old scars run deep. I've never truly been allowed to be normal around food.

I think it is much better to fill up on proper food two or three times a day instead of snacking.
If the cravings get too severe you can always have a babybel. Or a spoon or peanut butter or a boiled egg but babybels are so handy to take with you.

W"what about a bag of peanuts, lidl do them at 49p, easier than carrying a jar around..

For me it was the words High Fat... I thought this has to be wrong everyone is always telling me fat is BAD - so I continued to eat the low fat varieties, my BS's lowered a little bit with the reduced carbs but once I got my meter I quickly came to realise that low fat means high sugar!! I couldn't believe that what I though was healthy was actually harming me. So I swapped to full fat in everything but milk and found that suddenly everything fell into place. This site I thought gave a great explanation: http://lowcarbediem.com/healthy-high-fat-low-carb-foods/

So swap your cooking oil to Olive or Coconut oil. Eat real butter. Use Cream cheese, avocados, sour cream, full fat cheese, bacon, eggs, and fattier types of meat or fish. Eat nuts, the skin on the chicken. Healthy fats like this help to keep you fuller for longer - this is true and it really works. Also don't believe all the old hype that fat raised your cholesterol.... good fats don't and my cholesterol has come down since I began. You also don't have to eat the fat by the bucket load, you can increase your fat content without going overboard, ie.

1 teaspoon of olive oil = 40 calories - 28gs of fat
30gs English cheddar = 125 calories, 10gs of fat
1 tablespoon of Helmans real mayonnaise = 90 calories – 10gs of fat
1 tablespoon of double cream (14g) = 75 calories – 8gs of fat
Kerrygold butter (10gs) = 72 calories - 8gs fat

Its easy when you know how.

Although I haven't gone the whole hog, I'm doing well on the reduced carb trip, mind you when I mentioned it to my D-Nurse she was a bit concerned, but I assured her I wasn't cutting them out completely. I have steadily been tightening my belt and have come in quite a few notches (bit old to let my jeans hang over my backside Ha Ha) 9st 12lbs now down from 10st 13lbs over three months.
She was very happy with my weight loss and the fact my A1c showed me back in control at last. I underwent this because I want to stay off medication i.e.Metformin for as long as possible. As with some others my main problem had been constipation, probably worsened by not drinking enough water, ok now though.
A typical day would be , B/fast Porridge + Blueberries Tea (Milk No sugar) : Lunch Sliced Meat (Tongue/Pastrami etc.) Gherkin, Olives, Cheese, Beetroot. : Dinner Meat & Green Veg (very rarely I have a couple of small potatoes) or Fish and Basmati rice (Watch the portion size). My daily morning glucose is now typically low 5s to low 6s down from high 7s upwards.

Husband could do with loose a few stone, but try telling him to not eat white bread, right! Chocolate spreed on 4 slices of white bread, and thats after a large dinner. If i was to give him my low carb dinner he would just eat bread with it.
I am trying the lcht, I am loosing weight, im typ2 on metformin. Is husband encouraging me, not realy.
So i need loads of help from this website.

"holiday mentality"...oh, the despair after..
took a 4 day break. the only indulgence was 85% chocolate.
ate out a lot. although the bulk was healthy proteins, the problem was not being aware of what was in the one miserable bowl of soup i had and the small amounts of dipping sauces over 4 days. also, i did not have much fat and snacked on nuts.

outcome. barely in ketosis when i got back (but that was quickly remedied). more worrying was my elevated blood sugars. 3 days now and still not back to normal. :(

Yes, we're all going along together here on a wide path, plenty of room for differences but all supportive. You have to put yourself first, firmly. Cooking for two is ok, I pop a jacket spud in for Mrs D while I steam my veg. I don't make separate gravies (buckwheat flour to thicken is ok for me) but I do add cream to my white sauce because she doesn't like cream.
As for support from families, if you ain't got it you have to accept it. Plenty here.

Good to read all the posts on carbs but can't see anywhere how many carbs per day/meal is low. I use 1unit Apidra per 10g carbs and 10 units of Lantus each evening, any advice please?

Convention seems to be

Moderate carb - 130-225g carb per day
Liberal low carb - 90-130
Typical low carb - 50-90
Very low carb - <50
