Hello lovely people

I have been a member of the low carb for vegetarians on yahoo, quite a load of rubbish posted in there sometimes, by spammers mainly but also some really helpful things there too, I have copied the links below from the newsletter, I am happy to copy further newsletters as they come in if anyone is interested?

It's Lent, and at this time in many traditions people cut back on eating
meat. Some traditions, such as Greek Orthodox, are even more restrictive. Then
there are people who have cut back on meat, or cut it out altogether as a
permanent lifestyle. Or are doing so to save money in these recessionary times.
Can we do this without raising carbs? Yes! Here are some meatless (or, for
Lent, fish-based) recipes and ideas for low carb vegetarian meals. Have a great
weekend! Laura

My friend Terri is very dedicated to her way of eating. But what to do when
a diet based heavily on grains starts to be a problem? Here's how Terri cut
carbs and remained vegan. She shares recipes with us as well.

This recipe is really good! If you've been looking to add some soy to your
diet, this is a tasty way to do it, and it makes a complete meal.

PS and do get hold of Low carb vegetarian books by Celia Brown and Rose Elliott (nope I dont own a bookshop in case you are wondering)

I know what you mean shy girl. I am a veggie and any form of carb like potato or pasta makes my levels go really high. I am finding it really hard to think of something exciting to eat now. I have been having cottage cheese and apple for breakfast but it is making me gag now  Like you say though at least the weight comes off. Stick in I am sure we will find it all worthwhile in the long run.

I have got that way with the cottage cheese but it is ok with cinnamon on it. I am still confused about what is good and bad so the apples might explain the lack of reduction in my sugar after I eat. I am a smoker and the doc has told me not to give up yet until my levels are under control and I have to admit I thank him for it at the mo as I feel the same....not a lot of pleasures left. There are always cakes and choccy in our office and I just have to sit and watch everyone else stuff themselves but at the end of the day my health is more important (I am sure I will believe this one day  )

Hi Shygirl & Sam,

You may like to look at this link. http://www.glycaemicindex.com/
It lists many foods with GI and Carb content. Look around the rest of the site for other info. I used it to find what I could eat for breakfast as I was at first unsure of what was good or bad.

As for Apples - I regularly have one for breakfast sometimes with a small chunk of cheese. An Apple on it's own only raises my BG by 1 point after 2hrs. (12carbs/100g) I set myself a limit for GI levels first to filter out the high GI stuff then went through the list and ticked off loads of things I could have that were low carb. Try it and see.

Shygirl - as you are viceless and I'm an available pensioner - I'm free.

Hi Ken, Ithanks for the link, that might help. I keep forgetting I can eat a little bit of cheese. After years on diets I try to avoid it but as needs must and an apple and cheese sounds lovely. I have ordered the collins carb counter from Amazon but it seems to be taking ages to arrive!!
