Low carb

To be honest I have never tried. I don't eat meat so think it could be fiddly for me and I work with a long commute and have a family to feed so eating similar food helps with time management!
I guess I have it up my sleeve if all goes wrong with numbers.

Hi @Bridie9408 . Firstly can I ask what constitutes low carb?
Personally I don't see myself as a low carber and have my own reservations about LCHF.
I have tried low carbing on 3 occasions and have decided it's not the way I wish to live my life and manage my diabetes.
Back to my question though. I eat around 180g to 220g carbs currently on a daily basis. The vast majority of non diabetics I know eat far more carbs than me, many hitting maybe 400+ daily. With this in mind I probably follow a low carb diet.
For me it's not about carbs so much as it's about quality of healthy food as perceived by me.
Again on a personal note I feel this forum is heavily driven down the LCHF route and can be, at times a challenging place to voice non LCHF thoughts and opinions.
As a T1 I don't see myself as low carber.:):):):)

Good 2 know I am not the only one.

I have dabbled! Have never eaten excessively in the carb department-averaging 80-100. But that’s just how I eat.
Have tried cauliflower rice, celeriac chips and courgetti spaghetti and found I really prefer substituting these for pasta and potatoes. But as my husband said I have never been a big pasta/potato lover.
Having said that, if i go out to eat, in a restaurant or at someone’s house, I would just eat what’s available and enjoy.
One discovery made curtesy of the Libre, is that lower carb earlier in the day is better for me. The dawn phenomenon is a bother which continues to have an effect all morning. For instance, porridge before 2pm exacerbates the problem, after 2pm not an issue. Often eat porridge in the evening if peckish.

I agree with therower, a lot of the forum can be heavily biased towards LCHF. When people comment that they have eaten various nice high carb foods, people jump down their throats and make them out to be terrible diabetics. Let’s face it, because we have to monitor every morsel put in our mouths, we are eating a lot more healthily than a big sector of the non diabetic population. Who let’s not forget, also have spikes when they eat. They do not keep a dead straight line on that Libre.

Like @becca59 I adjust carb intake to the way it affects my control. I too find lower carb in the morning than the afternoon works best. I have no qualms, though, about having a carb rich nosh in the afternoon!

Define low carb. I probably average 50g or less most days but the more carbs I eat the more I have to inject and the more risk there is of screwing up badly.

People say it's not the way they want to live their lives. It's not the way I wish to live my life either. Nobody said this was supposed to be fun.

I'm quite low carb, 180g -200g (or a little more) a day, from porridge oats, Weetabix, brown basmati rice, wholemeal bread and we don't count glucose tablets or the odd pre swim small banana or the odd 27g mars bar :p

Complex carbs are the ones to eat if you get portion size to jab correct, complex ones take longer to digest and spike less, I read this low carb stuff with a shake of my head as I just cannot see a healthy way of eating processed meat such as bacon (it's nice as a treat but very unhealthy), pork fat I avoid like the plague, but then I'm proud of both my 51 year old 6 pack and low cholesterol :p .

I believe in the eat less, move more mantra, as it's worked for me over the last 33 years, each to their own of course as whatever you do sugars all about the ups and downs.

Pre bolusing is where it's at, I'd say :)

You eat less carb than most dietitians recommend, particularly for athletes. You are definitely a low carber, just not as low as some others.
Defining LC as a certain number of grams per day makes no sense. Eat low enough to get reasonable control.

@nickm . Wow me a low carber:):):):):). Still not sure I'll be accepted in to certain quarters of the forum.
The amount of carbs I eat are decided by myself with a few years of experience not a dietitian who only met me 15 mins prior to offering dietary information.
As for exercise I feel from my own experience that it has nothing to do with quantity of carbs but more quality.

I think you’re right. I think people should stop being so obsessed with food and get outdoors a bit more. Eat less, move more. Nice one.

I eat on average 100-150g a day. Some days 200, some days just 50. I don’t do any of it on purpose - it’s not planned. I just eat healthily and not vast amounts...most of the time.
Does that make me a low carber?

Not sure about being a low carber, but you are definitely a sensible, rational, contented and positive T1.
Low carb is a label. Unfortunately the only label I can think of for you at this moment is " normal ":wacky::wacky::wacky:

I am trying to eat no carbs other than those from non starchy veggies but in my own experience type 1 glucose levels are more complex than for type 2s who still have working beta cells. I do find it easier to do low carb now having eased myself into it and being convinced by the theory because I can just eat without counting carbs and over/under shooting my dose. So I am ploughing on and will see how my HBA1c is in September. Can't cure myself with this but am on a mission to minimise my doses.
