Low carbing

I started recording my sugars again properly yesterday and they were shocking - so im starting to try and totally low carb, today I had sardines for lunch, I was 7.2 before, took 4 units of novorapid, then im pretty sure I had a hypo a bit later but didnt treat it, when I got home I tested at 12.4 and have a massive headache - gah! How do you reduce your insulin for low carb? Just take it a little at a time? Yesterday I had two slices of toast for breakfast, took 4 units beforehand, tested at 15.4 four hours later! Thats what prompted me to start seriously looking at my diet!

If you make a big change to your normal diet you really need to test a lot more often and record everything for reference, as you're going to have to learn a different way of dealing with your food. I guess you must carb count so a bit confused as to why you would take 4 units of bolus for sardines as they are obviously low carb, unless you had something else with them. I don't low carb, more of a moderate carb diet so cant really help you there but hopefully someone else will come along. Well done for starting to record again though, I know its a pain but it's worth it.

If you carb count and decide to try low carbing, nothing really changes. As long as your basal is correct, you just reduce bolus insulin accordingly. You need to know your ratio, so, 1:10 for instance. 20g carbs=2 units. Do you know your ratio ? I agree with Garr though, 4 units for sardines seems high ?

If you go very low carb you'll have to take the increased protein and fat into account which may change your ratio and when you inject in relation to when you eat.

I dont carb count - asked dn about going on the course and she was very dismissive, I will ask again at next appointment, I have been reading how to think like a pancreas to try and teach myself, I sort of get the ratio thing, my brain just cant really get its head around it all.. iv just taken to testing very regularly and recording everything I eat and take and its going well

Think Like A Pancreas is a great book. A must for all type 1s. The normal starting point for carb counting is 1 unit of QA for every 10g of carbs, then, as you're already doing, test frequently and record and adjust as necessary
Here's a link to an online course, it's where I started.
