Have recently been diagnosed with type 2, having been pre diabetic for a while. Had my first appointment today with specialist nurse who was very nice, but not very helpful in terms of recommended diet, told me I could still eat chocolate but a little at a time.
I was given a magazine that seems to be written by Diabetes.org.uk. They recommend low fat and a fair amount of carbohydrate. This site recommends high fat low carb.
Have been fairly low carb for a while, but find I lack energy and lose weight very slowly, if at all. Am taking Metformin.
Should I go for more carbohydrate to give me energy or go for really low carb and higher fat

go for higher fats and low carb, the low carb will lower your blood glucose and prevent the pancreas from further decay.. if blood glucose is alltime too high it also damage the pancreas... so I will and am doing lower carbs and higher fats..

For your future health, we usually recommend a reduction in carbs and sugars, a reduction in plate size, and increase in your saturated fats and exercise depending on age and capabilities.
You can do this slowly to reduce the symptoms you are talking about.

The increased fats is to offset the reduction in carbs.
But you will have to find your own balance of carbs, fats and proteins.
We all have different tolerances to what effect foods have on our blood glucose levels.
This is why you need a glucometer.
To test, record, and help your doctor, dsns help you and to give you the information you need to control the condition.

Ask questions as you will get some great help on here, have a look around the success stories forum and low carb forum for ideas and recipes!

Best wishes

Hi Kate - Personally, I night want to try a few things before increasing carbs, bearing in mind what they did to my blood sugar when I was diagnosed.

In order to be more specific, could you perhaps give us an indication of what sorts of things you are eating on a daily basis. There could be a number or reasons for your lack of energy, from elevated blood sugars, to not drinking enough fluids, to plain old not eating enough. Counter-intuitively, eating to little can lead to slower than usual weight loss, because your body feels like it could e starving.

Hi. Having more carbs will not increase your 'energy'; the body doesn't work like that unless you are a heavy gym-goer or athlete etc. You do need to keep the carbs down to control blood sugar and I'm afraid Diabetes UK don't seem to understand that, amazing though that may sound. You should increase fats and proteins to keep you feeling full and these will provide any 'energy' the body needs through ketosis as and when the body runs out of readily available carbs. In practice even when low-carbing most people will still have more than enough carbs.

I would recommend low carbohydrate with high fat way of eating as it works for me, but we are all different. I was eating 20g of carbs a day and ate lots of healthy fats like olive oil .. coconut oil and nuts .. it worked for me as I am now in remission from my T2 .. do you have a blood sugar meter ?

I think that is a decision you have to make yourself. Personally If I eat something and I get a headache I know to beware that item. But for very personal reasons I can pass out at the sight of a needle. It seems to me that the people on here best able to manage their diabetes use a meter. Some meters are free because you have to purchase the test strips and lancets. IMHO I think you must become the expert in you and suggest you get a meter and let that decide what you can and cannot eat. Wishing you every success in managing this life changing pain in the head.
