Hi
I'm Type 2 diabetic, on Metformin 1.5 Gm /day, of approx 4 yrs but still struggling with what to eat. My HBCia has been around 7 until a recent check came back at 9.2 but I think that was due to a bad few weeks in my life when I ate stuff that was very high sugar.

I don't need reminding what I should/not eat but I need help to stick to what I should eat. Dieting, in any shape or form, has always been a huge problem for me, for various reasons.

However, the Diabetic Nurse I have just seen, said there was a Low GI book, with pictures showing portions and the amount of carbs per portions size comparisons. I didn't think, at the time, to ask her what it was called although I think she was saying she had seen several rather than suggesting any one in particular.

So, has anyone got one of these? If so, how do you rate it etc. What are the details of the book so that I might find it and look at it. I won't be able to get to a book shop for some time as yet but could get something online, once I know what I'm looking for.

For some reason, I'm just rather confused with all this - to say nothing about feeling totally p'd off with it all just now. I don't feel there is much support from the DN - only 'suggesting' you do this, that and the other and no individual perspective but that's most likely due to how I'm feeling just now ;(

Thanks for any help. It will be appreciated

Rosemary Conley wrote a few books. One is called GI Jeans diet. Not sure if the others are GI as well, but probably. My other half followed it, dropped from a size 12 to size 6, where she has been for years now (aged 54). It's not diabetic-specific though so you will need to take care with some of the foods & recipes. Your next problem might be finding size 6 jeans!!

The only book I know of that gives photos of portion size/carbs etc etc is here, by all reports, it can be very useful.

it doesn't tell you about the glycaemic index. For that(and the concept of glycaemic load) There are several good British books by Rick Gallop and also Nigel Denby (check them on Amazon)
There is also an Aussie book the New Glucose revolution: Diabetes & Pre-Diabetes Handbook -
The FAQs and GI news sections on the Univ of Sydney' GI site will also tell you more about the use of the glycaemic index

Hi
Thanks for your responses.
I think the Carbs & Cals book is probably the one that the DN was thinking of. It has the different portions/plate sizes that she mentioned. I'll probably buy that one to start off with.

I have managed to find my Collins Calorie Counter but it is a bit out of date and it might be worth getting an up-to-date one as many of the foods seem to have changed. Some of the foods I've just looked up are not there.

The Australian sight, re Uni of Sydney, is too much for me to take in at the moment and was just confusing me and frustrating me more but I'll take another look when I'm in a better frame of mind. Thanks for the link, though.

Thanks for the tip re Rosemary Connolly books. I'll give them a look too. Ha Ha, I'd be pleased to get back to a size 12, let alone a size 6 which I think would be a bit too much for my build ;)

Unfortunately, I don't like salads and actually don't have the motivation to prepare/cook, being on my own (which, in itself is a major issue re what I eat and probably most of the core problem)

I was also emphatically refused to be prescribed a blood glucose testing machine and sticks but, at least, she had the decency to admit it was down to cost. Seeing as the GP had said I would now be needing an additional tablet and to test before I drove, which would have cost anyway, it seems purely pedantic and sticking to 'rules' that one can't have a machine. However, I do have such a machine and so will start using it again, trying to get back on the straight and narrow.

Again, thanks for your suggestions
