Low HbA1c and background retinopathy

Mine were by the screening service. It was the quickest ever, and only two images per eye, where I've usually had more.
If that's the current screening service then I'd bet it has loads of false positives. I've usually had mine done by an ophthalmologist, who takes multiple shots of each eye, and redoes this if she's not happy with the quality.

@drahawkins_1973 - I just thought I'd give you an update on where I've got to with my situation.

Yesterday I called the number on the hospital letter to be told I should be talking to my GP. Great start. I asked why, in that case their number was on the letter with an invitation to call.

Transpired the best I was going to get yesterday was some feedback from an admin bod, who basically interpreted in her own way, the content of the letter my GP was sent. I now have a copy of the letter, which identified a classification of R1M0 for my right eye, and R1M0 for the left. I asked for a copy of the images, but have to do a Data Subject Access request for that.

So, today I went for my routine sight test. At the outset, with the "any problems?" questions, I just kept quiet, as I didn't want to influence any initial assessments.

His assessment was "all's well". Well, obviously "all's well could be the opthalmic equivelant of the medical "fine". So, I outed myself and asked him how the images looked. He was immediately surprised, saying "really?" Anyway, he then magninfied and magnified the images and poured over them, then he had me back on the manual machine and had his magnifier out, and had me looking at loads of angles to ensure he was looking all the way to the very peripheral edges. When he found nothing, he went to get a colleague, who basically did the same and they found nothing.

In terms of my visual acuity, my prescription hasn't changed at all.

He suggested I could have had a bleed and it healed, but agreed that wasn't at all likely, bearing in mind the NHS images were done on the 4th of the month.

Needless to say, I feel more relaxed tonight. Clearly someone saw something, but I'm satisfied that whatever it could have been was either an artifact on the image, or something incredibly minor.

This week, for more reasons than, this has been quite a rollercoaster!

I hope you have a similarly positive outcome drahawkins_1973. We don't need these curved balls flying in on us. It's no fun at all.

Hi @DCUKMod,

That's great news, very pleased for you! :)

Thanks for the update, fingers crossed I'll get a similar outcome.

@drahawkins_1973 - I had a call back from someone else at the screening service as the person I spoke with on Friday couldn't answer all of my queries.

The call itself was somewhat frustrating as the person I was speaking took great care to mansplain a whole load of stuff I wasn't interesting in. All-in-all, 24 minutes I'll never get back. (Yes, 24 minutes) However, the one good thing that I learned was that had I been called back by the screening service, the tests that would have been carried out would be the same tests a decent optician would use to examine the eye in any detail.

Good luck when you go!
