Type 2 Low sugars before eating

Type of diabetes
Type 2
Not sure best way to control. I was only testing after eating to see what spiked my sugars and what had little affect. I have recently started checking before and have found I'm regularly between 3.2 and 3.9 before meals, which in guessing isn't ideal. Been keeping post meals around 7.5 most of the time. Bread and pasta and potatoes spike as much as 10 and 12, higher number if I don't have protein with the carb, but I'm ok with basmati rice. What can I do to avoid these low 3's before my meals? Or what am I doing wrong? Been diagnosed type 2 since November 2015.

Unless you are actually having symptoms, BG this low is not an issue for Type 2's especially if you're not taking any medication. If you feel fine and the only issue is the reading on the meter - then it's not an issue at all really. I think @AndBreathe regularly sees those kind of numbers without hypo symptoms. The "normal" range for fasting BG can be anywhere between 3.4 to 5.4.

I can go as low as 2.6 before meals, although at 2.6, I'm usually hungry and want my food NOW!! I'm not regularly at 2.6, but I do go there. I do regularly see the numbers you do and feel absolutely fine. I am not at all concerned about those numbers, and provided you are not on medication which drive your bloods low
, and you feel fine, I would urge you to see it as a positive step. And, when it's before meals, you're about to eat anyway.

It's my belief many non-diabetics can go down to these numbers, but they never know, as they're not testing.

On the other point of your spikes from the heavier carbs; I'd be looking to bring those numbers down a bit unless they are your absolute peaks, shortly after eating. If they are your 2hour readings, you might want to shave something off those numbers.

Good luck with it all.

I am taking 2 X 500mg metformin sr in the evenings

Oh and I'm no longer eating those foods now I know how much they affect me

Saxon, it could be worth a chat with your diabetes care nurse/Doc/Team about your low readings. I might be possible to trim back your Metformin if that would be an attractive option to you.

If, in the meantime, you are trying to trim up a bit, the Metformin should be helping with that a bit, so you may choose to hang back on exploring trimming the meds.

You seem to be getting your diabetes ducks in order though. Well done!

I think I'll ask if I can maybe reduce the tablets, my bmi is 21, put on a little bit of weight since on pregablin for neuro pain in fingers and toes, but still 9 1/2 st, so losing weight hasn't been an issue.
