Lower my Metformin dose?

My HBA1c has been consistently 41 for the last 3 annual tests. I take 2 x 500 mg metformin tablets and the HCA has said that the nurse may want to lower my dose . Is that wise?

Do you want to lower your dose?
It's not just the nurse/doctor who decides, your own preferences should be taken into account as well.

I'm assuming you also changed your eating habits in addition to the metformin to get consistent normal hba1c's. Metformin on its own doesn't usually do this, although it can help.

We have many members who got off medication, and we also have many members who chose to stay on medication even with a normal hba1c, both are fine choices.

If you do prefer to consider lowering your dose, maybe it could be useful to do some testing before and after meals, or order a free sample of continuous glucose monitor to see what happens instead of relying on a blood test a year away.
If you're happy with how it's going on your lowish dose of metformin, nothing wrong with telling the nurse you'd prefer to stay on it.

When I got 3 consecutive HbA1c tests of 38,38 and 39, I asked to reduce my Metformin..The doctor suggested reducing from 3 x 500 mg, but recommend I continue with a single 500mg tablet each day. The reduction made no difference to my blood sugar readings.

That is interesting that it made no difference to your excellent results. Have decided to do a trial down to 1 tablet, the nurse wants me to look at coming off completely if the results stay good, but I want a lot more results before I decide on that.
