Luca's Ice Cream

For those of you who don't know, we have the best ice cream in the country up here. :)

I used to eat large cartons at a time as it was so delicious. Of late, this has been a taboo for obvious reasons although today I treated myself to a small wafer. I've only had ice cream twice since August. So I've been very good.

While in the shop, I noticed that they sell their own diabetic brand of ice cream which is obviously much more expensive and also contains lots of "suspect" additives such as hydrogenated fat and so on. So, I decided to steer clear.

The medical advice seems to be that diabetic foods should be avoided in any case and I'm inclined to agree. As long as it's just an occasional treat, surely I'm better off just having "a little less" of the real thing. I very much doubt if my little slider has done me much harm just this once
although I realise that many of you are much stricter than me. Of course, everyone has different circumstances with their condition and for many people even the slightest deviation might cause their health to suffer.

Anyway, I enjoyed it and I'm just away to the swimming pool for an hour. I'll do about 50 lengths as a penance. :)

I frequently have a large tub of Mackie's Ice Cream in the freezer. When I have had a low carbish meal, 20g or so then I can easily have a small portion of it as a treat. I too steer clear of ANY Diabetic foods wherever or whatever, they are simply not good for you.

As for Luca's - which bit of Scotland is that from ? Is it in the NE ? Next time I am up there I shall have to look out for it and as you say have a 'slider',..... us Sassenach's call them wafers....

50 lengths for an ice cream wafer? Sounds fair. For 50 lengths I hope you had chocolate sauce as well!!!

In the end, I only managed to do 42 as time was against me. However, I can always have 2 units of alcohol tonight instead of 3.. What an exciting life I lead!

Luca's is based in Musselburgh with a branch in Edinburgh too although the ice cream is sold in a much wider area. I love Mackie's ice cream too, by the way. :)

My Son is missing ice cream, I have been looking for skinny cow ice cream to check out the carbs but cant find any, I used to eat this when on weightwatchers it was lovely and didnt taste like diet food

Skinny cow is not low in carbs. The products I found had about 30gm carbs in them.this product sells because it is low fat. How about Mackies Ice cream which is 23.2 gm of carb per 100 gm. and just have a small portion ?

Ice-cream as a treat, don't worry about anything in it.
He doesn't need low-fat stuff, although the skinny cow stuff just tastes nice.

Ben&Jerries Cherry Garcia is gorgeous, made with low fat frozen yoghurt, with chocolate and cherries.

As longa s you know how many carbs are in it, I wouldn't fret too much over treats. They're meant to be treats, so whichever ice-cream he prefers.

Frozen yogurt is a nice substitute for icecream and if not low carb, it's lower than some things. The Lidl one is delicious, even the teaspoonful I have
alternatively, ther are recipes on the web, which you can make up with artificial sweetener instead of sugar.
