Lump at injection site

I injected insulin earlier in my stomach and as I pulled the needle out a squirt of blood came out and it instantly swelled to the size of maybe a ping pong ball. It was very easy to see, protruding out of my stomach. Now it's really sore especially when I bend.

Just wondering if I need to be concerned or not really?

Sorry to heard this Rosie.
It's a risk for us all. I have no idea what lies just under the skin, apart from some fat. I sometimes have a couple of drops of blood but nothing like you. Put an X there in indelible ink so that you do not use that site again.



Late onset T1, several auto immune issues.
Humalogmix25 twice a day, Methotrexate 25mg once per week, FolicAcid 5mg once per week, prednisolone 5mg daily, Allopurinol 300mg, Calcichew-D3 800iu, Levothyroxine 50mcg, Atenolol 50mg, Losarten 100mg, Aspirin 75mg, Nicorandil 20mg, Nitrolingual GTN spray, Metformin 2000mg, Allimemazine 10mg, Lanzoprazole 30mg, Atorvastatin 20mg, Co Codamol 8/500mg, Depo Medrone (Methylprednisolone) or double Prednisolone for 7 days in case of RA flare.

Has the lump gone down at all since?

It sounds like you've caught a vein or arterial capillary around the stomach wall area, which has caused the bleeding. Even with diabetes, your skin will close up pretty quickly, whilst the vein/artery will bleed until the platelets seal the breach. That's possibly what the lump is, although I've never experienced once that size - even when I was using the prehistoric, elephant needles that were almost an inch long!

If you place a mildly hot cloth over the lump and soothe it firmly, but gently using a circular motion, that should help reduce the pain and swelling - at least, it worked for me.

Hi Conrad, I stuck it in all the way like I usually do. Only got 4mm needles and I pinch the skin up too!

I've had one before but only small like the size of a pea. It doesn't feel like it's gone down but it's not really that visible anymore so it must have. It was about 4 hours ago now.

I haven't really got any fat on my stomach so find it hard to get a pinch and always find it painful there but don't usually get this. It's very odd, feel sore like a bruise

Hi Alan, definitely won't be injecting there again. It always hurts in my stomach but don't usually get a lump like this :(

Well, seeing as you ladeez have thinner skin than us lumbering males, combined with your svelte waistline, I suspect you've hit an arterial wall or even the muscle wall! :inpain:

It probably is a bruise - only this is one under your skin and the fat layer. Did you inject up to the hilt of the needle? (That was an old 'favourite' of mine.) If so, perhaps if you only go 3/4 or 1/2 it won't result in the same scenario. You could also try the 30-40% angle, rather than straight in.

Bruise has started to come out today. It's still a late lump but it's not protruding anymore. Injected in my stomach again today and same thing happened, little blood and then lump but just the size of a pea. Bruising already and really sore.

My stomach is clearly off limits for injecting. I never use it at home anyway I only do it in work just because it's obviously easier. Thank you for your help :)
