Maintaining weight

Type of diabetes
Type 2
I don't seem to be able to maintain my weight. I am a type 2 diabetic diagnosed 4 months ago and opted for control by diet and exercise. I have used low GI foods and lost 24 lbs!! However I don't want to lose any more and if I eat more food my blood sugars go up. I don't want to look gaunt and stringy. Any ideas?

Hi. How old are you? Are you now around normal weight? It is always possible you have one of the many forms of diabetes somewhere between type 1 & type 2 like some of us have and weight loss is a problem. You probably do need meds to reduce the blood sugar whilst still being able to eat reasonably so I would discuss this with the GP. It is likely from what you say that your pancreas is not producing enough insulin rather than you being the more normal insulin resistant T2 resulting from being overweight. I'm afraid a low-carb diet, exercise and tablets are probably the only way forward. Do let us know if you are quite young.

Unfortunately I am not quite young being 69, but it does look as though I am not producing enough insulin rather than being insulin resistant. I shall try and see the Diabetic Nurse who hasn't been very helpful as yet. Here's hoping!

not an answer but a question sorry, if you ate a "fattening" food to excess that dosent affect bg wouldnt that work? ie. cheese or double cream or something, i mean if you ate a bucket of double cream a day would you not gain weight? without effecting bg? im not suggesting this im just using it as an ridiculous example but you see my point?

I am visualising a bucketful of double cream but somehow I don't think I can face it. You have put an idea into my head now - I think I will make a pavlova for tomorrow's tea. I have spoken to my diabetic nurse and she isn't too concerned, suggesting an extra portion of vegetables. Now doesn't that sound exciting.

Hi Franny

I had much the same problem and agree with what Douglas says. Type 1 here who sticks strictly to my carb intake but very skinny and unable to put on any weight. Weary of always feeling cold I met up with the hospital dietician to get some ideas about how to put weight on. She asked me to keep a diary for a week of everything I ate.

When she checked it out she agreed I'd met my carb target every day but the food I was eating was calorie deficient. At lunchtime I love my sandwiches with cold meat. She asked me to stick with the bread but change to cheese & onion filling or tuna mayonnaise. That doubled the calories. At weekends or as a snack during a working day she suggested at lunchtime to have a two egg omelette with 40 grams of cheese. Very, very few carbs (if any!) but lots of calories. Feta cheese was another suggestion and unsweetened but high-fat yoghurt.

Another recommendation was to get hold of the Carbs and Calories book which is now my bible. I can easily now compare foods with similar carb content and choose those with higher calories.

Slowly my weight has begun to increase and I am very happy with that. I guess I was concentrating a bit too much on getting the carbs right rather than the calories.

Of course, it's all a very personal thing and what is good for me might not suit others. I am just very happy to find that I can buy clothes that feel like they fit a little better now and I don't look so much like a scarecrow.

Bill

Thanks Bill

I can't describe myself as skinny but thanks for the advice about calorie intake.

Franny

Still glucose in dairy, so it would affect your bg.
