Malibu

This sounds silly but always thought that I should avoid Malibu because it is so sweet! However when I looked online it seems that there are 0g of sugar per serving and around 5g carbs for a serving. Does this mean that a few malibus with a diet mixer will not affect blood sugars badly? I'm fairly new to all this so any help would be much appreciated because I'm struggling to make sense of this.

Thanks

Drinking it with a diet mixer will be fine. Rum is made from sugar cane, but during the process the sugar is converted into alcohol. So is one of the better alcoholic drinks you can have.

I realise this thread is from 10yrs ago but I have a follow on question. I like the odd malibu and fresh pineapple but now know how bad the pineapple juice is for me. I've recently tried mixing the malibu with Asda's 'no added sugar' pineapple and orange squash and it makes a nice drink. The question is, is the squash better than the juice for my levels?

Hi and welcome to the forums.

Reading the Asda label on the squash should give you a clue. That will give the total carbohydrate which is the figure you're interested in. It usually also says "of which sugars" but the total carb is the more important . I'd be surprised if the squash is not lower in carb than the juice.

Real question is what impact it has on you, regardless of whetehr it's lower than the juice or not. You maight be swopping something really problematic for something only a little bit less of problem.

The best way to find out the effect on you is to test your blood glucose levels before and two hours afterwards. You'll preferably need to isolate the drink, so eating/drinking nothing else during the test period.

I’ve looked at Malibu for carbs I can only find 1 source that says 5g carb but several sources that say 11g carb all (all sugar) for a pub measure so I suspect that the 11g carb to be the more accurate one. So even if the squash has no carbs then the Malibu is still quite high

Also if you’re drinking it at home and your home measuring of alcohol is like mine (I’m a gin girl) then they will probably exceed that of a pub measure ;)

ETA missed word

For Malibu itself I'm seeing 18g carb (sugar) per 100ml. A lot higher than beer on carb by volume.

Some of the sources confusingly quote in "servings" without being too clear about what that serving might be. If a bar measure is 35ml, 6g is close enough, before adding a mixer.

Thanks for the replies KennyA and lovinglife. That's an intersting link KennyA, I'll be sure to investigate that further thanks. As for home measures lovinglife, I've used single and double shot glasses to measure my drinks for a long time now, even before I was diagnosed T2, boring I know lol

Or sensible? ;) I don’t drink at home very much these days, only when we’ve company I just don’t enjoy it as much any more, not that I don’t like a drink when I’m out

I started measuring home drinks a few years ago when the vodka and coke consumption was starting to get out of hand. A friend suggested it to help me cut down. We rarely go out now so most drinking is at home and I stick mainly to beer and lager. I haven't had spirits in the pub for years now lol

How to you find the affect on beer and lager on your blood glucose? It’s very carby and I can’t handle it, some call it liquid bread and I have to agree. I do have the odd bottle of skinny lager in the garden in summer it’s 3g carb a bottle but I only have 1 as it uses up my carbs as I do keto.

When I started testing a couple of months ago my BG was around 22.0 but I knuckled down to the diet and I'm averaging 10.7 now. The beer/lager doesn't seem to affect it too much, but I'd have to stop drinking altogether to test that. I stopped smoking 8yrs ago and I'm not going to stop drinking any time soon lol

Doctor told me to get below 10.0 to start with then see how we go. He's put me on half a Gliclazide a day, that's when I started testing. My last Hba1c (mmol/mol) was 80% up from 74% three months earlier.

Your going in the right direction that’s the important part, I’m sure as you get further into your journey you’ll be able to reduce the numbers further.

If you don't mind "fizzy" a zero lilt type pop could also work (pineapple & grapefruit)
