Man Problems :-( Advice/help needed

Hi Guys,

Male here, 20 yrs diabetic and on pump for the last year! Last Hab1c was 6!

Problem is i've not been able to get erections!
Have seen doc but not pushed to help and advised to get Viagra or Cialis

Would like to chat to anyone who might be able to give me information or advice

I recently went to the doctors to see the nurse about injections for my holiday to Egypt, while i was there clear as day she turned round to me and said do i get problems with erections, now this caught me abit off guard at first i have never heard of diabetic men getting erection problems as such but needless to say she said if i had she could prescribe me stuff to help with it. This probably wont help you but just a reply for you.

Advice is fine but your doc can prescribe anything you need that is listed for NHS prescribing. All he has to do is endorse the script with SLS and you will be provide with what you need prescribed free.

Viagra is just one of the products on the list of drugs only to be ordered in certain circumstances (see Part XVIIIB of the Drug Tariff ), which means the prescriber has to write the letters SLS on the prescription as authorisation. If the ‘SLS’ endorsement is missing, the prescription should not be dispensed and will not be passed for payment by the NHS BSA Prescription Services. Pharmacy staff cannot make the SLS endorsement.
All male diabetics are entitled to Viagra etc under Part XVIIIB of the drug tariff and all GP's should know this as part of his/her erectile dysfunction training.

Thymoxamine Hydrochloride (Erecnos)

b) a man who is a national of an EEA State who is entitled to treatment by virtue of Article 7(2) of Council Regulation 1612/68(c) as extended by the EEA Agreement or by virtue of any other enforceable Community right who has erectile dysfunction and was on 14th September 1998 receiving a course of treatment under a national health insurance system of an EEA State for this condition with any of the drugs listed in sub-paragraph (a); or
c) a man who is not a national of an EEA State but who is the member of the family of such a national who has an enforceable Community right to be treated no less favourably than the national in the provision of medical treatment and has erectile dysfunction and was being treated for that condition on 14th September 1998 with any of the drugs listed in sub-paragraph (a); or
d) a man who is suffering from any of the following -
diabetes
multiple sclerosis
Parkinson's disease
poliomyelitis
prostate cancer
severe pelvic injury
single gene neurological disease
spina bifida
spinal cord injury; or
e) a man who is receiving treatment for renal failure by dialysis; or
f) a man who has had the following surgery -
prostatectomy
radical pelvic surgery
renal failure treated by transplant.

It's not only men who can share about ED, some of us women have experienced this from the other side of the bed, with our partners or husbands...

I just want to reassure you and all our lovely diabetes brothers that ED is very, very, common in men with diabetes. All health professionals who deal with diabetes should be able to ask their male patients if they want to talk about it. Don't be shy - they really have heard and seen it all before. Your doctor can help. If you don't feel comfortable, ask to see someone else. They want to help - a happy patient is a less stressed one, and is more likely to be healthy long term.

Thanks for the replies and he prescribed me tablets so will look and see how they go!
If not, he'll get me an appointment with someone who deals directly with the problem!

You are on about NHS England. The other three NHS's (Scotland, Wales and NI) have diferent rules.

Diabetes affects nerves and capillaries. ED in diabetics is commonly attributed to autonomic neuropathy. If ED drugs don't resolve the problem, then specialists you could try to get referred to include endocrinologists who have a reputation for expertise is autonomic neuropathy.
