Mashed Potato Substitute/Dreamfields Pasta

Hi All
Has anyone tried any of the 'Instant Mashed Potato' substitutes that are available on various sites?

I'm fairly new to low-carbing, and my other half is really supportive, but am struggling with this one because the only way I can stomach using mashed cauli instead is using cheese - unfortunately this would put other half in hospital as he has a severe allergy - so we have reached a bit of an impass :(

I know these 'substitutes' are quite expensive but wondering if they might be worth the expense to be able to eat together sometimes rather than having to almost make two completely different meals!!!

Also -are there any other 'substitute' foods available on these sites (lowcarb megastore is the main one I've looked at) that might be worth a try?

thanks
Trulee

(just looking again - anyone any comments on Dreamfields pasta - worth the effort or not?)

Have you tried mashing celeriac with swede I use this instead of mashed spud .It is good on shepherds pie ,if you use lots of gravy to begin with you soon get used to the mash

Many thanks both - will give the celeriac and swede a try - sounds good. Celeriac is not something I've given much thought to before!!!

Phoenix - very interesting, think I'll give that one a miss then!

Hi I read that with interest. I'm never one to trust a fad but I can honestly say the pasta works for me. I have tested and 'normal' pasta puts me at 18 -20 and I peak at 9 with the substitute one. I have found it brilliant for my nighttime meal when I am bored of just meat/salad options.

I wonder if anyone else has tried it?

Yep I tried it after reading a post on here about it a few years ago, a total waste of money IMHO. I tried it once having just a very small portion and I was in double figures within an hour, I rarely if ever record readings over 8 nowadays in fact 7's are a rarity so to go straight into double figures came as a bit of a shock especially after reading the blurb about it not affecting bg levels.

In my opinion the advertising blurb about it is not only misleading but potentially very dangerous as well, to tell diabetics that this product doesnt affect bg levels is just a huge lie IMHO and in my experience too.

DONT TOUCH IT would be my advice.

Wow, I wonder if my results are a fluke then? With me being high all the time I avoid pasta as a rule, but I have this once a week and it genuinely does not make me high, which I find incredible. Going to try it again tonight without exercise and see if I end up high :?

I assume you are still covering it with some insulin kareeta, maybe that makes a difference, but from this T2's perspective it was not good at all

In fact I remember recently throwing the remaining Dreamfeilds pasta away, things can get lost for years in my cupboards

Oh yes, I still take 7units of humalog to cover it as I would the normal pasta, the only difference being I haven't had to have a correction dose before bed.
