Anyone tried Mastering Diabetes and their approach to improving insulin resistance??? Just investigating pros and cons... is it something which could work long-term or is there a honeymoon period???

Quite a lot of people on this forum are mastering their diabetes, many putting it into remission. There are also many on this forum who don't have diabetes, but are aware they have, or are fast approaching, insulin resistance. Once diagnosed as a diabetic means you'll always be diabetic. Keeping a close eye on what carbs you are consuming, to a lesser or greater degree, depending of course on how deeply diabetic you are. Many here also control their diabetes through medication. It's an adjustment to a new way of eating and possibly a new way of life.

I'm not sure what you mean by a 'honeymoon period'? Are you asking if people relapse? We're all human, and sometimes life gets in the way.

Welcome to the forum.

Hi,

Welcome to the forum.

How long have you been T1?

I notice you are T1 @Jan W so the advice for you will be very different than that for T2. I had a quick look at the website and bearing in mind that I’m T2 on no meds they seem to use quite a few carbs in potatoes, sweet potatoes, brown rice and wholemeal pasta. I definitely couldn’t cope with any of those

For you as a T1 this may be something that you could manage but I don’t know as my knowledge of T1 is limited, have you been diagnosed with insulin resistance? Reducing your carbs may help with that if you have, there are some T1 on the forum that lower carb along with their insulin - I’ll tag @Antje77 who is LADA but I know she eats low carb

Hopefully other T1 will be along to offer better advice than I can

I'm a Type 2 diabetic as well. But I feel my experience of carbohydrates and insulin resistance is relevant to give an opinion of the claims of the Mastering Diabetes crowd.

1. Their high carb plant based approach makes no sense when you consider that it is carbs that digest into the glucose that goes into your Bloodstream.

2. They claim that Low Carb makes Insulin resistance worse. Again, that makes no sense since Type 1's on Low Carb need less Insulin and suffer much fewer hypos as a result. And Type 2's on Low Cab mostly put their T2 Diabetes into remission - which they couldn't do if low carb made Insulin resistance worse.

3. I have read an analysis of their claims by an ex-member of their group. This showed how they falsified the figures and equations in order to purport to show that their method reduced Insulin Resistance.

4. Dr Bernstein's 'Type1 Grit' Facebook group have a far superior and far longer track record of dealing with Type 1 Diabetes.

Like @Jaylee said, can you tell us a bit more about why you feel you have insulin resistance?
The Mastering Diabetes program is aimed at T2's, not T1's.

I think they are aimed at T1s as well?

But they lost me when they said I could have as much fruit as I like except avocadoes...

Seriously though, I haven't tried their approach so it's not really fair for me to comment on whether it works for T1.

Yep, one of the organisers (maybe both?) I believe is T1. I’ve seen some “interesting” talks over the years. Looks like selling a dream to me & I’ve been around the “block” as a T1 for quite a few decades..
