The article - pages 24-25 - gives a menu for saving kcals & fat.

For Type 2:
The whole day's diet - 3 meals adds up to:
Carbs - 112 g; Fat: 39 g (7 g sat.); Protein: 91 g; Fibre: 17 g; totalling 1216 KCals.
The savings are:
Fat: 88 g (39 g sat); totalling 980 KCals.

Is 1216 KCals an adequate supply of energy? I understand an active man needs 2,000 - 2,500 KCals, while a woman needs 1800 - 2000 KCals.

The article looks more like a recipe for hunger rather than a helpful diet. It's not sustainable.

Hi. I wouldn't take too much notice of the Recommended Daily calorie Allowance we all read about; why do you think there are so many obese people around? I know some people go way beyond the RDA, but even if you stick with it you are likely to put on weight; something my wife could tell you about! I personally don't worry too much about calorie intake. As a diabetic I worry about sugars which means keeping the carbs down. If I lose weight I need to eat more protein and fat and vice versa. I think the diet you quote is a bit on the light side but not too bad for an oldie like me.

How many controlled type 2s not on insulin would eat so many carbs?

HELP - this forum seems to start in the middle of nowhere ?

How do I reference the original page 24/25 ?

or am being as thick as you know what ?

Hello Superchip .

IanD is referring to the may-june balance magazine of DiabetesUK .
It isnt about DCUK ...
Page numbers 24/25 of the magazine, to refer his topic choice here .
You will need a balance magazine to look these pages up .

Hope this helps :)

Anna.

why do you think there are so many obese people around?
Because no one follows them - I seriously doubt that you can stick to the GDA for sugar, far and salt if you eat processed/prepared foods.

As for the calorific total, it's important to remember that the predominant opinion is that T2 diabetics are diabetic because they are fat, and putting them on 1000kcal/day until they are cured would make a certain amount of sense. Whilst there is some support for that idea (e.g. Newcastle diet), I doubt that it is that simple.

Edit to add: having received my issue of Balance, I think the point they were trying to make is that the book is great for finding the carbs in food (T1 example - a whopping 1500 kcal) and working out calories in food (T2) for losing weight; not that there is anything wrong with book which is useful for anyone who doesn't know regulation ice cream scoop volume etc. It's basically a free four page ad for the book.
