OK so saw @Indy51 s suggestion re. MCT Oil on the "constipation" thread - I didn't know what it was so looked it up - seems too good to be true! Found some on Amazon (KetoPerformance) that gets good reviews but a bit pricy (£19 for 500ml ). BUT - has anybody used it? Is it as good as it seems? Is it worth the money? Does it promote ketogenesis as advertised?

I am finding that I am tending to eat a bit too much protein ATM and I think this is causing me to overeat (food cravings - I reckon it might be down to gluconeogenesis - what do you think? OTH, it might just be that I am a greedy pig). Will the MCT Oil help? I think it might as it should increase satiety?

Your obs & opinions eagerly awaited.

Thanks

Medium chain triglycerides - my memory isn't totally shot away then. Produced from coconut oil, and supposed to do wonderful things. It seems a bit high faluting to use to increase satiety - couldn't you just add some olive oil to a salad or casserole, eat more kippers or bacon or indulge in a leg of lamb or a pork chop?
I do use a bit of coconut oil from time to time but mostly I rely on more ordinary sources of fat.

Don't forget you're talking to a man who owns an electric spiraliser :)......(still using it BTW, so not another "back of the cupboard" job...just can't find the soddin' courgettes to go in it..GRRR..)

Yes, MCT does promote ketogenesis it seems. Apparently there are also powdered forms that seem to be more easily tolerated than the oil (mixes well in drinks). You can also now buy exogenous ketones (not the raspberrry "ketones" diet food junk, but the real stuff). I've heard some people say the exogenous ketones do help suppress appetite. Haven't tried them myself, so can't speak from experience.

I've used MCT a few times when I was experimenting with bulletproof coffee but coffee and I don't get along. Also used it in versions of bulletproof hot chocolate. I use it for cooking eggs from time to time. I find it more palatable than coconut oil - have never really liked the taste of that stuff and the more I try to eat it, the less I like it, so have given up on it.

A good way to get coconut oil in your diet is fat bombs. Might help with constipation as well.

Have not tried MCT oil. According to Dave Asprey of Bulletproof coffee, their version of MCT oil (Brain Octane) are suppose to be 4x times more bio-available.

Basically I am happy with virgin coconut oil. Some are more fragrant than others, and hence more palatable. I usually take a couple spoonfuls in the morning or night when fasting. This is to ensure adequate fuel for insulin resistant brain.

I find that even when glucose level drops to < 4 mmol, I don't get the usual hypo symptoms...brain fog, heart palpitation, intense hunger etc.

I've tried it. But I can't comment on how well it promotes ketosis is because I wasn't testing for ketones at the time.

Used it (like Indy) in coffee and hot choc.

But I did resent the price. Couldn't get it out of my head that it was mainly a trendy money spinner for those Keto Gurus that pop up everywhere, spouting Mystical Ketardisms - so never replaced it when I ran out. :)

Thanks all for your replies...think I will try coconut oil, first then.

Somply eating few enough carbs and enough fat keeps me nicely keto/fat adapted - but not always actually in ketosis.

I just hedge my bets and try to include a regular "dose" of virgin coconut oil together with my butter, cheese, Greek yoghurt (all apparently natural sources of MCTs). A spoonful a day helps keep the hunger at bay! :p

As an aside my two dogs love coconut oil - a teaspoonful a day is a favourite treat, and their coats are lovely and shiny - even on the cheap standard coconut oil I get for them. In general they think my LCHF food is the best thing that's ever happened in this house! :D

Robbity

PS I's agree with @Brunneria, as I've just checked the price and no way would I pay that much even if I could afford to do so. I'm very wary of all the super expensive super food gimmickry that abounds nowadays.

Interestingly enough, I just watched a webinar on the microbiome and the speaker (Kiran Krishnan, microbiologist) said that MCT oil is great but that coconut oil may not be that healthy, especially in larger amounts, as it contains a high percentage of long chain saturated fats like lauric acid which are not very healthy for the gut and are highly implicated in endotoxemia (which nobody wants).

Maybe I had a lucky escape in finding coconut oil so unpleasant :)

@chalup - further to the previous post, he also suggested that anyone with autoimmune disease would be wise to avoid coconut oil as endotoxemia is a promoter of intestinal permeability, a significant factor in autoimmunity so thought it might be a factor for you as well?
