In process of helping a family member (type 1 diabetic ) acquirie a puppy / young dog for company, purely by chance I came across a few posts on another diabetic forum. Very interesting but posts were from 8 years ago so wondered if anyone on here may have more recent useful info or has personal experience within this subject.
Mind set on a getting a pup so thinking be good idea to consider the possibility of future alert training into the mix along with everything else when choosing a suitable pup.

There have been a few threads on these on the forums, including at least one with some links on training. Try search topics such as
hypo alert dogs

I'll see if I can find the one I remember which had links to youtube videos on training.

As a retired professional dog behaviourist (among other careers over the years) yes breed is very very important, as is the lifestyle any prospective owner can offer the dog. Really any kind of assistance dog should be trained by a professional who also trains the prospective owner and then matches a particular individual with another. Otherwise the situation can be miserable for both, but especially for the dog, which can't speak up for itself.
