Medication change suggested, sure I cannot do the change

So my Community Diabetes Support nurse wants me to stop taking Pioglitazone because of the weight gain effect. Fair enough. She then said she wanted me to start Gliclazide instead, but when I started taking Byetta I was told I couldn't have the Gliclazide. She then said she would call my GP and get him to do me a prescription for the Gliclazide and I was to start it ASAP.

Has anything changed since 2010, as far as taking Gliclazide with Byetta is concerned? I'm worried about taking a medication that I was told by a consultant that I shouldn't be taking with Byetta. Anyone else on the Byetta Gliclazide and Metformin combo?

Thanks for any replies.

Perhaps you should call your doctor and ask to be referred back to the consultant.
My younger brother was diagnosed T2 in his 30s and he did very well for ten years on metformin and gliclazide, then he stated having hypos because his BG had improved so much he only needed the metformin. He lost two stones in two months when he stopped the gliclazide.
I only use a low carb diet and it keeps me on an even keel, (6% HBa1c) .
So how you doing with the low carb, eating to the meter?

Thanks for replying, sorry for delay. Been having computer problems.

With regards to medication, GP changed it because he agreed that the weight gain side effect of Pioglitazone combined with risk of cancer (didn't mention which one) meant that being on Gliclazide was better for me. He says that I can take that with Byetta, so going with him on that. Been on for a few days now, no sign of any ill effects.

Low carb wise, not very well. I've been strict with it, but because I've had a cold I have been naughty a few times and just pigged out. Trouble is, if I don't get the weight and sugars down quick, I will be on insulin within the next 2 months which I don't want.

Hi. Has your GP discussed the possible use of sitagliptin? It's an option for some people. It's weight and hypo neutral. It's an option in the NICE guidelines. Gliclazide can cause weight gain if the pancreas does produce more insulin as a result of using it.
