Medication.

Hi all. Does anybody know if it is possible to be type 1 and controlled by tablets and diet. (Something my doctor has mentioned). Got a meeting on the 24th to discus it. I'm a self employed HGV driver and at the moment my licence is suspended because of the insulin. Tablets would mean I would get my licence straight back and start to rebuild my working life.
Many thanks in advance.

Hi Marky,

Welcome to the forum. I'm not sure if this helps you any but I am a type 1.5 and I control at the moment just with Metformin but I am apparently in a honeymoon phase and will need insulin when the rest of my beta cells are destroyed... My guess would be that if you have no insulin production left yourself then no you would need to inject because insulin doesn't come in tablet form at this moment in time... If you do produce some of your own insulin then tablets that increase your sensitivity to the insulin u produce may be able to control your levels but that is something you will need to check with your medical professionals as they will need blood results from you to check how much of your own insulin you are still producing, if any.

Hope this helps and maybe some type 1 members will come along with more solid advice for you :-)

Diagnosed with GD in 2010, Completely disappeared postpartum. Re-diagnosed December 2012 with type 1.5 diabetes, age 26, BMI 23 currently controlled by only Metformin, 500mg twice a day.

Re: Medication.

Thank you for the response, that's defiantly put a light at the end of the tunnel.
Blood tests were done, early last week so will probably get the results when I go to the hospital.
Thanks again. X ;-)

Re: Medication.

You can still drive LGV and use insulin. You just need to prove that you are managing your diabetes and not having loads of hypo's. I am type1, insulin and LGV driver too.
