I love peri peri chicken..and if you ate then tested 2 hours after 5.8 would be MORE then acceptable in my eyes
As for 3 hours later and the awake at 4am. ..mmh.
It sounds like you were concerned, so probably worried and stressed, you've checked while half asleep..which I'm guessing is not your normal waking time.
So yeah, could still be the food or could be DP..or just stress or just lack of sleep..who knows.
Scores is still ok.
I would add, I do find a random test useful, just to see what's going on outside my '''normal" times for testing.
For that, I find it's consistency, testing like with like, which helps me get a better measure of how well I'm managing my regime.
So in the AM it's on waking, as the kettle boils.
Food pre then 2hrs..and then again before bed.
Remember diabetes is a word, not a sentence.
Sometimes we just have to let go a little bit and cut ourselves some slack to enjoy the nicer things in life BEFORE we start pushing up the daisies.

In my experience the lack of a postprandial spike followed by elevated fasting was always caused by excess protein. This may or may not be the case for you but, based on what you’ve told us, I suspect it may be. It’s a somewhat controversial topic of discussion, and some folk seem to think that because this doesn’t happen to them then it can’t happen to anyone else. Speaking only for myself, I’ve seen it dozens of times, testable and repeatable time after time. As your insulin sensitivity improves you would see this effect greatly diminishing. Just my thoughts based on my own experience. Others are free to disagree.
Edited to add: in any case it’s not worth beating yourself up over. It’s a rocky road and you can’t make progress without learning from errors and mistakes along the way. You’re changing dietary habits that were fostered over a lifetime, so naturally there’s a learning curve when completely turning it all upside down. As the saying goes, you can’t make an omelette without breaking a few eggs
what type of diabetic are you, and are you on meds which could lead to hypos?I was doing so well. But last night I went out with a friend and I ended up eating grilled chicken (peri), and that’s all I had with 7up free to drink. But loads of sauce (garlic mayo and sweet chilli). Everything just went out my head. I just ate and ate.
Got home and 3 hours later my glucose was 5.8 woke up at 4am and checked it’s at 6.7 - is this the dawn phenomenon?
Really need to work hard and avoid these condiments that must’ve had sugar so were carby and I had a lot as it was help yourself or maybe it was the dressing on the chicken. I checked my self and 7up doesn’t raise my glucose
I think I’ve seen this before mass protein leading to high glucose later

It’s not really a factor for me anymore, as my insulin sensitivity has improved such that I don’t see a measurable rise in glucose after excess protein , but I still tend to maintain at very broadly 70g-80g per day just because I feel it’s optimal for me (I’m 63kg soaking wet). Time of eating made no difference. It was always in the days following overconsumption that I had raised fasting glucose. A 24 hour fast would reset it immediately.
