The medical advice is not.

However, as individuals we can experiment carefully and I'm pleased to say that despite 2 x 500mg SR twice daily, it does not affect me when I deem its time for a good single malt. I don't swig half a bottle and its usually mid evening, but so far the effects have been zero with not a hypo in sight.

On several occasions I've sunk a bottle of strong red wine followed by a large glass of port. As I take my metformin straight after my evening meal I've often washed it down with a glug of wine  I don't drink beer, but I don't think two or three pints would be a problem.

I've been taking metformin over five years at quite a high dose. I don't drink all the time, but as I said with no problems, but I have made my friends aware to act quickly if there are any problems.
