metformin and heart problems

Hi @lloveco. Welcome to the Forum! My guess is the moderators will probably suggest or move this to the Medications sub-forum? and the section on metformin. This thread you have attached to is a very old one. But lots of interest in metformin and side effects of course - as it's so popular and a go-to drug for those with type two diabetes. And just a ps - you say your diabetes is diet controlled but it has 'insulin dependent type 2' on your profile/side bar. You might want to change that? Anyway - I look forward to engaging on the topic of metformin more with you and reading others' inputs too...

Long term T1 here, Have had MANY "issues" with incompetent g.p's, especially with the current one, leading to the loss of a leg. So as you can imagine, I am NOT in favour of them, for any degree of diabetes related treatment. She was even made, by her practice, to go on a diabetes course (2 days ?) and is the practice's diabetes specialist, even though she's only there for 3 days each week. Suffice it to say, I run rings around her, on the few times I've needed to see her or anyone else there. Yes, she maybe okay for hangnail. etc, but... considering the number of diabetics, which is increasing expotentially, then training they receive(d) is woeful.

Anyway, have been on S.R. Metformin for maybe 12/15 years, dosage now 3 x 500's. The standard release version had the usual side effects, with me. The gen. practice, were quite resistant about me changing from 2 x 500's (the then recommended NICE dosage) to 3 x500's, but ever since I did, it had a very significant effect on my insulin resistance.

Since then, both of my insulins have changed, which has also had a similar effect & dosage has changed, i.e. been reduced as well. My hospitals, diabetes drug specialist, who has always been a fan of metformin, is very happy with the outcome & results.

the dietery advice given in the Diabetes for beginners booklet produced by (DIABETES .U.K.) no less so whats going on? who knows the truth? these people host this site! are they giving out ill advice or what, this guide was supposed to help me, and now i just dont know,
Very confusingly, there are 2 organisations in the UK with very similar names. Are you sure the leaflet you have is from the organisation that hosts these Forums ie diabetes.co.uk (Commonly proponents of low carb)? The other one is diabetesuk.org. (Commonly more old-fashiond.) If you Google "diabetes.co.uk low carb" you will get lots of leads, or better watch this Youtube video with the adorable (and sound) Dr Unwin. He is a GP & T2 diabetic who has steered many many T2 patients to better health. You will be in safe hands with him:
