I am being given metformin on top of insulin soon. Can anyone comment how much it will bg by generally once it builds up to.the effective dose.

Thanks

Hi. I once Googled the web on the effect of taking Metformin with insulin. It only has a slight effect on reducing blood sugar; perhaps by 1 mmol. It's main advantage is helping with any insulin resistance and I gather it has some heart-protective qualities.

Just wondering then why type 2s are given it all the time. Lets say you are type 2 with FBG of 15, then getting it lower by 1 mmol doesnt seem so effective.

Metformin works by increasing insulin sensitivity & arresting liver dump of glycogen.
But this by itself is not a "magic bullet" with regards to blood sugar managment. It's widely accepted that carbohydrate in the diet needs to be reduced too, to achieve healthy BS managment..

To be fair. As an insulin dependant myself. The same aproach to diet can also be said!
