Metformin help, please

Tonight I took the last of my 3 doses of metformin (500mg x 2) at 10.45pm, with food.
I completely forgot I had taken the tablets and took 2 more at midnight, 1 and half hours later!
I'm slightly worried.. :?
 
What is your total dose in a day? I'm on the old maximum dose of 3 x 850mg which adds up to 2550 mg a day. If you've taken around this sort of amount you wil be fine.

They revised down the maximum dose to 2000 mg a day as it was felt that the extra 550 mg didn't do a lot for BS levels.

Hi Jackie

Somehow I don't think that Metformin would cause any problems but to be totally sure, you could always give NHS direct a call and get their advice.

I agree with ladybird's post. I very much doubt there would be any harm, but phone NHS direct if in doubt.
One point;
you say you take 500mgX2, three times a day. That is 3000 grams, more than the normal max which is 2550.
Are you sure you didn't mean 1X500 three times?
If you are taking what you say, you might want to ring your surgery just to make sure you haven't confused the instructions.

So, thankfully there were no adverse reactions to my 'overdose' .. lol..

Re your comments on my daily dosage, I've just checked my prescription, to see what it actually says, incase I've been wrong,
and it says - ''500mg x 2 TDS'' (three times daily)

So, yes, it's 3000mgs! - but now you mention it, it does seem rather alot, doesn't it?!... :eh:
 
DOES that mean three times daily, or TWICE daily? Still think you should phone and check, it's definitely more than the normal daily maximum

I went for my 6 monthly hospital diabetic hospital appointment a couple of weeks ago,
and they checked through my prescription with me, against their records,
and it was confirmed that 2 metformin tablets were being taken three times a day, with each meal - breakfast, lunch and tea...

But, I'm a little concerned now, that I'm taking more than the highest recommended amount...?

I've been on this dosage for a good few years..
 
It's obviously not doing you any harm do don't worry. Just ask at next visit. And it's only a bit over.

#It sounds as though an error has crept in somewhere along the line. Maybe you could try asking a pharmacist?

While I don't suppose it will do you much harm you don't want to take anything unnecessarily.

My Practice found a diffficulty with TDS which is a term more familiar to hospital staff than to the "hicks in the sticks" {which describes my pracice perfectly}. Might this have been a source of confusion for your practice too?
 
my gp tried to finish me off with metformin. i was takin 850mg 1 tablet three times daily and he wanted to increase it to 4 tabs. i told him no chance and he had to look it up in his little bnf book. and he saw i was right, that indeed that much metformin is too much. and this doc is meant to be the diabetes specialist at my surgery. i work as a dispenser in a pharmacy so luckily had a fair idea of what was what. after that incident i dont trust them and i always check the priscription when i get it, just to be sure.
 
I could have imagined this but didn't 3000mg USED to be the daily limit?
You say you have been on this dose for some years, maybe the amount hasn't been lowered in light of the new limits.
I'm sure someone else in the past said they were on this amount too at some point.....or maybe I dreamed that too????

As you can see - 'Memory is a Poor Tool' and because of this you should use a tablet dispenser - surprised nobody has mentioned this already (unless, with my blurred sight - they have ha ha ha).

The thing is, I'm usually spot on with my tablet taking, BaliRob,
It was just a slip up the other night.
You see, I took them before I actually started eating, and it kind of didn't register,
And then an hourish later, it was an 'ooops, I've not had my tablets!' and quickly popped a couple more! lol..
But of course, as soon as I'd downed them, it dawned on me, I'd already had them!... Dohhh!... lol
Ne'er mind.. I'm still here to tell the tale, eh :roll:
 
Dear Jackie,

I am no better than anyone else - even with the dispenser I sometimes forget to take my meds (only the morning tabs) but at least I know then that I have not taken them and overdosed. I KNOW that I would make every possible forgetful mistake but for my dispenser - go on, tell me - do you use one ha ha ha?
