Metformin problem, maybe?

Hi.
I've had an upset stomach and diarrhea for around 3 months. I had all the relevant blood tests which were fine. My GP is suggesting that my problem could be metformin even though I've been on it for over 10 years and have had no previous problems. I'm also on insulin. This sounds a bit unlikely to me, though obviously I'm not a doctor. Has anyone had a similar experience or could offer any advice. Sorry, didn't mention that I'm type 2.

I have seen a couple of other people report this and I wondered if the things added to the drug to make the tablets might have changed recently what with things being strange.
So many things are unavailable at the moment that it would be odd if such things were not affected.

Presumably the way to test this theory is to stop taking the Metformin for a while and see what happens.
I'm guessing that your doc would support you in this.

if there is no change In your gut situation, then you can got back and press for more investigation.

Having had upset stomach and diarrhoea for months at a time, myself, you have my every sympathy. In my case it has been caused by long term after effects from tummy bugs. The latest was giardia.

Hi, I have recently stopped my metformin due to gut issues, stomach pains and constant running to the loo.
I was diagnosed type 2 in 2014 and put on metformin, I took the slow release version. I have always had stomach issues of various degrees since starting the medication.
During lockdown I bought myself a blood glucose meter, bought the diabetes code book by Dr.Fung, joined this group which has been most beneficial, did lots of research into diabetes. Started low carb eating.
I stopped the metformin about 3 weeks ago, no more running to the loo, no more Stomach pains. To be honest it’s not really made a great difference to my numbers , I’m in the low 6 range, with the metformin I did get high 5’s but I’m happy to take that as my quality of life is much better.
I have lost 21lbs so continued low carb and weight loss I am hoping to achieve to reach the 5 range myself without meds.
The only way you will know if it’s the metformin is to come off it, however, as always you should speak to your medical professional first.
Good luck
