Metformin Reduction?

Has anybody managed to convince their doctor or diabetic nurse to reduce their metformin medication? I have previously asked if I would be able to come off of the tablets if I got my BG under control and was answered with a very thoughtful "very unlikely" I was diagnosed at a level of 55, reduced to 44 after 3 months and down to 38 at 6 months, I'm due for another review in the next couple of weeks and wondered if anybody could advise on responses they had received?

Personally I stopped taking them and told the HCP's afterwards. It was my decision and mine alone. By following LCHF I seem to be able to control my blood sugar levels well and so don't need the meds. If you have a meter then test yourself regularly and check that your levels don't spike.

You don't need to convince them. They need to convince you of the need to take them, just as they should for any drug.

I have plenty of boxes in my bathroom cabinet that I didn't take, and I told the pharmacy to stop ordering repeat prescriptions a long time ago.

Hi. It's your decision not theirs and if your blood sugar is now down to 38 if it was me I would spend a while without them and see what your next HBa1C is.

I'm off mine for a trial 2 months. Made me so ill. My sister has lowered her levels so that she's off meds. That's in Spain, so she has a really good Mediterranean diet.

Thank you all for your advice. I think the best course of action is to move to Spain and follow the Mediterranean diet and enjoy life in the sunshine, less stress and not craving chocolate would also help in lowering the levels:cool:
I'll see what my HbA1c results are next week and then probably tell them that I want to test the water without meds and make sure that I don't drop off the LCHF diet too often!

I just wanted to update you that my diabetic nurse actually gave me the option to come off metformin, as I had maintained below pre diabetes levels at my last HbA1c. So I need to carry on the good work and promote LCHF and intermittent fasting as a means of managing diabetes type 2 without medication, despite it going against NHS guidelines!
