metformin serious side effects

i was diagnosed 21st march with type 2 i was put on metformin slow release after a few days started to have palpitations and irregular heart beat so i stopped them i am taking gliclazide 80mg 3 x aday with no problems, does anybody know of a replacement for the metformin that wont affect my heart as i have chronic heart disease angina

Hi Norman,

It would be best to go back to your GP with that question! Or diabetic nurse! You could probably phone the surgery for advice!
I'm not sure there is anything else like Metformin!

Hi. I don't think there is anything quite the same as Metformin but if you are an overweight T2 then the right low-carb diet is a good approach as Metformin won't reduce sugars by much anyway. If you are normal BMI then the Gliclazide might be a useful drug anyway as it can prod an underactive pancreas to produce a bit more insulin.
