Hello I have Type 2 Diabetes plus Under active Thyroid
Metformin have been taking now for about 1 year.
Initially I also had Gliclazide as well as other meds for blood pressure and under active thyroid and a type of statin.

Got off the Gliclazide which I really wanted to get off.
Metformin started slowly on slow release now and
probably for 9 months have taken 4 tablets 500mg morning (2)
evening (2).

Until a few days ago I could tolerate even though (I do not like taking anything if I can avoid doing so).

May not be Metformin as Thyroid can give similar feelings
But I had stomach churning and dash to the loo situation (not happened before). I spaced out tablets but could not get advice from GP or pharmacy yet. I know Metformin can affect B12 but I think that's ok.

It may not be the Metformin at all but do others on the Forum
either refuse to take them or limit their intake - I am not due to see Diabetic Nurse until February 2026. I am still overweight I will have to take Thyroid meds for life.

I check my blood sugar regularly and my last 2 HBA1C tests have been good,48 and 52.

Does anyone take a different medication that does the same as Metformin I do not want to start insulin if I can avoid that.

But I do feel the Metformin I am taking is making life difficult. I feel more tired recently. It's September now I can or will get some advice from
Surgery this coming week. But I like to get opinions from Forum members as I feel they guide me towards what to ask as any appointment or advice can take time. I want to triple check if I can
that I am asking for the right thing. I try to follow low carb when dealing with Diabetes - I do slip up suddenly have to have toast or a jacket potato but I do my best to get back to order.

Would just appreciate any members view on Metformin - can I just come off completely or change dose ( some opinions before I tackle GP or Nurse). Thank You.

I wonder if it could be a change in the ingredients of your tablets rather than a reaction to the actual medication.
I was put on Metformin when first diagnosed, but could not live with the effects - very violent reaction. As a result I find it easy to stick to low carb just by murmuring 'Metformin' as I contemplate eating something I should avoid.

I was on Metformin for six years and tolerated it well. I then changed to a GLP 1 med for reasons I won’t bore you with here. There was then a spell of being unable to get the new med so went back onto Metformin. This time I couldn’t tolerate it, I got very bloated and painfully windy, so things can change. I was then swapped back onto a different GLP 1, but I won’t accept Metformin it if it was offered again!
