Metformin slow release

I take two metformin slow release per day. My question is do I have to take them with food? Sometimes I only want one meal and don’t want to force myself to eat for the sake of eating to take the pill. I don’t snack either.

I take mine straight after my evening meal as my stomach tolerates it better and I only take one now as the side effects were a bit extreme.

I take them with and without food (usually former) and have no issues either way

your prescription should say a recommendation?

It just says one a day for one to two weeks and then increase to two a day. Unfortunately in the current climate trying to get a consistent response from the gp surgery is very difficult as they are super busy with the pandemic

Thank you. I’m on the slow release ones. I had a tummy upset from day two to day four but I’m on two a day now as into third week and touch wood no digestive issues only aching legs at night

From personal experience, when I started taking them without food my blood sugar never changed, soon as I had food it would start to go down. I now have them with my breakfast and evening meal and work brilliantly.

Thank you. I am doing intermittent fasting and don’t eat until about 3pm then usually go to bed about 10pm so fitting in two meals is a bit difficult

Sounds good. Hopefully you will be like me, one of the many who tolerates it well. But to be fair, normal metformin was less ideal but as I recall it wasn’t as bad as some poor people get.

Originally when I was on 2000 I took all 4 at night, but moved to taking is split twice a day. I continue to do that on the 1000 I am now on. Not sure if it being split in this way makes a difference being slow release
