Hello all and Merry Christmas :-)

Had been on normal metformin [2x500mg morning and evening] since my diagnosis in '08 and everything was reasonably well controlled, but i started getting bad bouts of diarhea in the summer past, and without much investigation my gp changed me to 2x1000mg of metformin SR every evening......problem is my guts have developed a painful, gnawing, ache at times, i mean really bad, in bed last night at 830 with it.

Cant say for sure if its the new dosage of metformin, but am pretty sure it is....though i've had a few other issues this year requiring ibrufen pain killers which could also have messed my guts up.

Was just wondering if i took 1x 1000mg tablet in the morning and 1 in the evening would it perhaps be easier on my gut and still as effective at controlling my glucose?

Sometimes I can be in a quiet environment and the upheavel going on in my guts is unreal like a constant loud gurgling, and definitely worse since my metformin was changed...

Many people have trouble with Metformin but changing to Metformin SR means that the problems go away. Your problem seems to be that the opposite is true in your case which might mean that something else is going on. You should see your doctor and explain this.

Your suggestion of taking the tablets morning and evening could be tried but I still suggest telling your doctor about this.

Good luck and I hope this clears up for you.

Problem was I had no bother with Metformin in almost 6 years until this bout of diarhea, and felt my GP rushed into changing me to the SR although my sugars did seem to improve well after the switch....but I lost about 20lbs at roughly the same time so this would also have helped my sugars come under control.

Does the body become less tolerent of Metformin the longer we are on it maybe? As I said had been taking it for nearly 6 years without problems.

Anyhoo, have taken 1000mg SR this morning and will take another tonight and see how it goes, obviously will be keeping an eye on BG levels in the meantime.

Thanks for your input.

Hi. I've been on Met SR for 10 years with no problems at all but I do take one tablet in the morning and one in the evening ref my GPs' prescription. Met doens't have a big effect on blood sugar so if it's giving you problems then I would discuss a reduced dosage wit the GP or even stopping it. Diet, low-carb, as always is the key to BS control

Most people seem to have tummy problems with the normal Metformin but they stop when they are changed to the SR one so maybe your problems are not due to the Metformin best to see your doctor
