Hello so I've been on metformin for roughly 3 months now....I had no problems beforehand but the past week or so I've had problems with diarrhoea and extreme nausea! I spoke to my GP Who suggested a viral infection, which I initially thought it could be but today I forgot to take my metformin and I've had no problems with my stomach....could it actually have been my metformin???? I'm going to talk to my Consultant tomorrow but want some feedback on here! X

Metformin crucified me for three months before being taken off it so I wouldn't take it out of the equation

Hi. The answer is probably yes. Metformin is notorious for causing bowel problems for many and the Slow Release (SR) version is much kinder. Surely your GP should know this and changed your script?

GP wasn't the one who prescribed it lol...they haven't put it on repeat still! I just didn't think it could have been the metformin as it's Been fine for so long but I'm pretty certain it's that now! Il get my consultant to change it tomorrow! X

Yes I'm type one and on 850mg of metformin 3 times a day and have awful stomach problems with it at times.

My consultant has taken me off of it now...as we don't think it is doing much for me in third trimester but will be put back on a small dose once I've given birth!

Metformin are renowned for causing diarrhoea as they don't suit all.
