I'm on metformin and obviously can't drink alcohol with them but my question is would it be harmful not to take them for 1 day over Christmas so can have a glass of wine with my Christmas dinner

I would say that it should not be harmful to do that.

Metformin is a drug that builds up slowly, and missing one or two doses should not effect how it works in the longer term.

Of course, I should add that you might want to check with your GP/Nurse as I am not a doc.....

I think many of us have some alcohol with Metformin. The leaflet does say No, but I suspect a small quantity wouldn't matter. Do check with a pharmacist if necessary. I've been on Metformin SR for around 14 years and have had alcohol in sensible quantities during that period with no ill effects. We are all different though and certainly don't binge.

I've never been a big drinker so definitely wouldn't binge just odd glass wine or glass larger that's enough for me

The drug info says not to drink excessively as it can cause a hypo. If you are really worried about it you should call your doctor as no one here is able to give you medical advice. I have had the odd drink with no ill effects and I am on the max dose of metformin. I would not skip my meds personally.

From my own experience I drank wine happily when on metformin. This is my personal experience, it was ok for me - try it and see maybe? I think many drink alcohol on metformin with no bad side effects.

Check with your pharmacist though if you want to be doubly safe.

I have a small glass of wine or a beer most days. When I asked the pharmacist he said a little is fine, but not to overdo it. I don't want much actually, but enjoy a small white wine while I'm cooking, then prefer water during the meal. I'm sure the drugs people are just covering themselves, and some medics are so anti alcohol they impose a blanket ban.
