Metformin

Metformin did dreadful things to my insides, so I stopped taking them. It had no effect that I could see, my BG levels went on going down, and I was even more determined to stick to low carb - and now, six months after diagnosis my numbers are just about normal. not prediabetic, normal.
They will go lower - trust me on this. Just thinking about taking Metformin is the most effective deterrent to high carb eating ever.

Oscarbromley - totally agree and I on SR. Not even doing much for BS. Steadily climbing - trying low carb for couple of days now - not much effect yet. But I do highly recommend trying this method over metformin to start at least - no sugary drinks, or snacks do not add to your hot drinks either. Bake with something like Natvia - no white bread. In fact the less bread the better. Good luck.

Resurgam - how long did it take on low carbing to see a drop in sugars - today will be day 3 - still at 18.8 - was 16.8 yesterday. Levels rose after my recent holiday in Canada. Now stubbornly staying high - sugar strictedly vetted. carbs intake minimal - I am under GP with this problem.

Metformin isn't the most effective bg lowering drug. However it helps with insulin resistance and other hormonal defects.
I find I lose weight on metformin not without, no matter how low my bgs go. (Gliclazide or insulin)

I didn't have a meter at first, but the effects must have been fairly swift as I was at 17.1 when diagnosed and did not see anything like that number when testing. I started out eating no carbs at all for about 20 hours, then some salad with dinner.
What sort of foods are you eating, and how minimal is your intake?

gliclazide increases the insulin your body makes, therefore you will tend to put on weight while taking it.

There are newer drugs that work by making your kidneys exspall more sugar, these costs more and the long term risks of taking them are not well known yet. However like metformin they will allow you to lose weight.

But controlling the carbs you eat so you can come of drugs is the best options for most people with T2.

Have now been prescribed Gliclazide 1x 40mgs a day, what gets me no info was given, no possible side effects and no info about what they do!

I reacted quite badly with the normal Metformin - luckily at the time (or not so luckily) I was getting daily visits from my DN at home because my BG was very high and I refused to go in to hospital. Because she could see the affect it was having she swapped me on to the slow release variety and I've been taking two of them every morning ever since. I find I can't take it in the evening though - I get the horrible symptoms back if I try taking it in the evening.
