Sorry if I’m being a pain but I’ve now had my consultation with my doctor and he has put me on metformin straight away. I’ve asked for the slow release as I’ve heard that the other version can have some undesirable side effects. Does this drug help ease my diabetic thirst?

Your diabetic thirst as you call it will be caused by high blood sugars. Metformin though it is helpful in a minor way, you shouldn’t rely on it to bring your blood sugars down by much. It’s more important to lower the carbohydrates in your diet. All carbs turn into sugars once digested.

Diet will have a far greater impact on your T2 than any medication.

Lowering your carb intake as much as possible (we need to eat zero so...) will help bring your sugars down without meds.

For me metformin was a nightmare both regular and extended release so I binned it.

I agree with BulkBiker, I didn't take the recommended Metformin, took one standard pill and well... let's say it was not good so I was switched to slow release and told the side effects wouldn't be as bad. But I didn't fancy another experience like I had with the standard version, however 'less aggressive' so didn't take the slow release and remained on a low carb/low calorie diet. My thirst went within a week, my blurry vision went after 10 days and I dropped a stone in 3 weeks. My BG was extremely high on the HbA1c -112, I'm due another on 30 August, but already by checking my BG on my monitor it's down to around 8.6. This is after a month!
I'd recommend following that diet as it works much faster than Metformin would have. Don't be pushed into taking meds.
I can recommend Dr Michael Mosely's 8 Week Blood Sugar diet, there's recipes and meal plans in there and you can adapt some of the recipes quite easily if you want to. This is the book I'm following and I can't praise it high enough. It brill!
Good luck!
