Hi, I am seeing our GP nurse to discuss my latest blood test results. 47 (before this results were 48 then 52). I have started a keto diet again and am sticking to 50g of carbs or less. I was out earlier and met someone randomly who overhead me talking to my friend about the possibility of being put on Metformin and he told me that this eventually turns diabetes type 2 into type 1! Is this true? How would this happen?

Absolutely impossible, metformin does not cause autoimmune conditions like type 1.

What may be possible is that this person knows someone who was diagnosed with T2 and put on metformin, and they later found out it was T1 and not T2.
This person may have somehow wrongly concluded that the metformin caused the T1.

Thank you, perhaps

Another explaination is that the person referred to relied on Metformin alone to control their diabetes, and as many of us know you need to make other changes too. They may then have progressed to more and more medication, ending up on insulin. Ending up on insulin as a type 2 does not mean you have become type 1
