I was dignosed t2 last September and my hba1 was 7.0, ive stopped eating the stupid amount of chocolate and I eat muesli and try to be good. my readings on my own meter are usually between 6.7 and 9.2. I think I would like to try metformin and am due to see the doctor next month.can I request to go on metformin or will the doctor refuse me as I am overweight.

Hi chocolate cups,

I may not be the best to give advice, but I have used Metformin and it did help for me. However the first Metformin I tried made me feel awful and made life very miserable. Some people are fine on it but it can upset your stomach. it got to the point where I couldn't even look at food, which is not good! I am currently using Metformin PR, this is a prolonged release form of the drug and I find this much better. My advice is talk to those that know, they will advise you and hopefully you'll soon be seeing improvements.

Keep trying to be good! :D

Metformin should bring the numbers down a bit more, the 9.7 is close to what some doctors see as a normal safe max. Its worth asking to see if metformin will help you, the closer to normal reading the better.

Hi. Metformin is most useful for diabetics who are overweight and hence insulin resistant, so your GP should be keen to prescribe it. Yes, do ask for the Slow/Prolonged Release version SR/PR. It's a bit more expensive but not that much. At an HBA1c of 7.0% you should be having some meds as well as a low-carb, low-GI diet if the diet aspect isn't working well enough. Keep portion sizes down of course where you can.

do I inderstand that you think Muesli is better for your blood glucose than chocolate? it may not make much difference.
I just did a quick skim through my reference books and most brands of muesli are around 15% - 20% carb. Muesli bars are more, because of their sugar content. and then think of the portion size!
I certainly don't eat any breakfast cereals because of their high carb contents. Granolas may be beter, but my books don't have any reference to them.
You say you are overweight, so I'd recommend looking at your total carb intake. Eating natural foods with loads of green leaves might help.
For breakfast this morning, [ I had it with my 2 year old grandson, ] We had soft boiled egg. I had 1/2 a slice of Burgen Soya and linseed toasted with mine. Joshua had 2 slices of a small white loaf cut into "soldiers"!
For lunch we'll have a tomato and cucumber salad wih a bit of cheese and dinner will be some kind of fish, as yet not determined.
I do have one square of dark chocolate as a treat most evenings. Dark chocolate is very satisfying and usually very low in sugar.
Having said that; I've been using Metformin for about 10 years and it has never made my insides bad.
