Hi guys! Happy New Year to all!!! My diabetes has improved greatly due to me now taking Metformin 500mg 3 times a day! I stopped the Gliclazide 4 months ago and the weight is dropping off! Plus my BMs are fantastic!! My question is - Can I take Metformin on an empty stomach? The reason I ask is that some mornings my BM is 7 when my last BM the night before is 6. Can I take a Metformin to bring that reading down? I don't normally eat breakfast - makes me feel soooo sick - so it would be on an empty stomach.....Just wondering!! XX :)

Hey there,

I am pretty new here but I had my nurses visit last week and I asked the same question to her. I don’t eat breakfast either.

She said to me that metformin works better on when taken with food but it can be taken without it. So I guess it depends on how effective you need it to be.

Also, apparently, not eating breakfast is one of the worst things that you can do for your metabolism. My nurse suggested that I change that habit to better manage weight loss etc…

I do take it without food. I sometimes get the runs, sometimes not - no pattern to whether it's with food or not.

Told by our nurse always to take it with food either during the meal or straight after

Thanks Grill!
I've read something this morning where research has been done into whether breakfast does actually matter...and the answer is - NO!! 2 groups of overweight people were either given breakfast or not and there was no difference in the weight loss of either group!!

Hi. Plain Metformin is best taken with food. Metformin SR (Slow Release) is less important with food. Note that Metformin works over a longer period of time than Gliclazide so you can't take it and expect the next meal to be affected; it takes days and affects your overall 24 hour blood sugar level
