Hi everyone i love tea and drink a few cups a day but my bs go mad and up in 17 to 18 range.Does anyone know an alternative please

kind regards to all debi.xx

Hi Debi.
I use Semi Skimmed milk all the time........it would only raise my Bg by a tiny amount, if at all, and that is actually by drinking glasses of milk not just the tiny amount you would use in your tea ! I really don't think this rise can be attributed to milk alone ?

Do you know what your Bg levels are throughout your day, before and 2 hrs after meals ?

Can you tell me what sort of diet you have. That could well be a contributory factor in such a large rise. However, what is the level before you start drinking your tea ?

Hi ken i wake up and im 12-13 i drink tea and dont eat breakfast then my bs is 18 so can only put it down to milk. Also if i have sheddie wheat which has no sugar and semi milk my bs goes to 20.

Debi.
The level when you rise in the morning is as you know high. You then say you don't have breakfast and you only have tea. That would not shove Bg levels up so high.

Is there some other medications that you take, I noticed from your previous posts that you are on a few different drugs.......there are some which can seriously interfere with Bg levels. I know this to my cost as I was on some ant-Cancer drugs recently and all my Bg levels soared.

As for Shredded Wheat....that is high in Carbs (30.51g for two biscuits plus say 10g carbs for the milk = 40g carbs) This could significantly raise your Bg levels. It is not a good idea as a Diabetic to skip breakfast etc as this can cause the liver to dump glucose into your blood stream again raising your Bg levels, sometimes significantly.

I am not sure if you have been given advice that we usually give out to Newbies here. It explains the relationship between Carbs....which INCLUDES sugars and how to go about reducing Bg levels. Here is the information which may help you better understand what is going on.

Ken

Here is the advice we usually give to newly diagnosed type 2 diabetics. This forum doesn't always follow the recommended dietary advice, you have to work out what works for you as we are all different .

It's not just 'sugars' you need to avoid, diabetes is an inability to process glucose properly. Carbohydrate converts, in the body, to glucose. So it makes sense to reduce the amount of carbohydrate that you eat which includes sugars.

The main carbs to avoid or reduce are the complex or starchy carbohydrates such a bread, potatoes, pasta and rice also any flour based products. The starchy carbs all convert 100% to glucose in the body and raise the blood sugar levels significantly.

The way to find out how different foods affect you is to do regular daily testing and keep a food diary for a couple of weeks. If you test just before eating then two hours after eating you will see the effect of certain foods on your blood glucose levels.

Buy yourself a carb counter book (you can get these on-line) and you will be able to work out how much carbs you are eating, when you test, the reading two hours after should be roughly the same as the before eating reading, if it is then that meal was fine, if it isn’t then you need to check what you have eaten and think about reducing the portion size of carbs.

When you are buying products check the total carbohydrate content, this includes the sugar content. Do not just go by the amount of sugar on the packaging as this is misleading to a diabetic.

As for a tester, try asking the nurse/doctor and explain that you want to be proactive in managing your own diabetes and therefore need to test so that you can see just how foods affect your blood sugar levels. Hopefully this will work ! Sometimes they are not keen to give Type 2’s the strips on prescription, (in the UK) but you can but try !!

As a Type 2 the latest 2010 NICE guidelines for Bg levels are as follows:
Fasting (waking).......between 4 - 7 mmol/l.
2 hrs after meals......no more than 8.5 mmol/l.
If you are able to keep the post meal numbers lower, so much the better.

It also helps if you can do 30 minutes moderate exercise a day. It doesn't have to be strenuous.

semi skimmed milk in my coffee will increase my bs up 3 to 4 units. Milk hates me. Its a one sided love affair.

Hi all how confussing no sugar and no carbs i havent got a clue what i should be eating then.Any tips on breki lunch and dinner,Thank you debi.xx

Hi debi

I have cold meat (with a spoon of Tesco cheese-chive dip) for brekkies quite often (or 2 eggs or 3 bacon). This is an hour after having 2 mugs of tea on waking (full fat milk but not much of it in each, plus one sweetex in each). Before the teas my bs are in the 4s (I low carb) and then with the cold meat or whatever an hour later, I have a benecol and 10 almonds. The bs at one hour and two hours after starting this meal is in the 5s. A couple of hours later before lunch it is in the 4s or low 5s. If you get a meter and test before and after meals, noting what does harm, you will be able to make some sort of progress. Honest! But that's just a suggestion for starting the day. btw I don't eat after 10pm at night and that's a snack (dinner is half 6). So there's 10 hrs before my fasting test on waking, if that helps. Everyone is different but it's something to help you start thinking.

Debi.
The advice doesn't mean 'no sugar and no carbs ?' it just means to reduce them that's all. you should get plenty of good advice here as to the sort of things that you can eat. Have a look around the food forum and anywhere else where food is mentioned. You have to decide what works for you, nobody can hand you a list of things that are good to have.....it has to work for you.
