Morning everyone :)

My husband is type 2 diabetic. He takes x2 injections and metaformin. His eating is good. He is over weight but we do what we can to get him active to lose weight.
Since the start of the year we have tried various different eating plans:

1. Ketogentic diet - we start this 1 year ago, his blood turned acidic and he landed in hospital with ketoacidosis - so we came off this and he changed meds and it made him gain weight. The depression kicked in and the vitamin D deficiency followed. We had to change meds back again.

2. Eating once a day - We then started him on eating once a day for a few months and it started to work, sugar levels where stablising, he was in a position to start decreasing meds slowly. But his sugar levels start to misbehave - he was waking up with sugar levels of 10 in the morning and by the time we went for our morning walk of 3km when he got home his sugars where at 15. During this eating plan he lost 10kgs.

3. Eating x3 times a day but small meals - measured out at 300g meat and veg of choice (no complex carbs) - It was time for a switch for we recently started his eating plan - yesterday due to stress at work, his sugar levels spiked to 21. He is waking up with sugar levels of 10 and i am not sure what else we can do from here. His exercise his moderate, as it spikes his sugar levels the moment he does something.

Can anyone advise how to control these sugar levels especially in the morning and during the day spikes due to stress ???

I'm a bit surprised about the ketoacidosis... That doesn't usually happen in a T2 unless there's a whole lot going wrong at the same time, or there are medications involved that would cause that... You say he's on injections, but injections of what? Some medications can give one ketoacidosis, but if you mean insulin, then that's off the table, I think. It's something to look into, anyway... Whether the medication he's on might be responsible for that episode in the hospital as it may be unfit to combine with a low carb diet. Mind you, I'm NOT saying he should stop those injections, whatever they are, but it's good to know why this happened. It's rare, and if you know why it occurred, you can possibly prevent it happening again, maybe. Knowledge being power and all.

Can't come up with anything else at the moment, though with the highs being related to liver dumps due to Dawn Phenomenon and stress, you might want to discuss upping the metformin with the doc?
Good luck, hopefully someone else will be along who'll be a tad more useful...
