Hi,

Just wondering if you can help. My boyfriend was diagnosed with type 2 and put on metformin, but has just had a call from the hospital that he should have been diagnosed with type 1 and on insulin from the start. What effects could this have had?

Thanks

The same thing happened to me. I was diagnosed with type2 diabetes. My GP at the time said I could not have type1 as I was too old at 68yrs. I tried to discuss this with him. But he wasn’t listening. I was prescribed metformin. I bought a accu chek to measure levels as I was losing weight rapidly very thirsty feeling unwell. My glucose levels were around 18/20/26mmols fasting I phoned the surgery and spoke to the same GP who advised I continue with the metformin. Also to have a blood test done. A week later the blood test confirmed type1. I was in hospital for two days on a insulin drip. Just in time. I had ketoacidosis.

How long was you on metformin for? His has now been 2 years. He takes tablets for acid but has recently been advised to stop by the doctor and now having tummy pains which was diagnosed as IBS. I hope you're feeing better now

Hi. I was 68 when, out of the blue, I was diagnosed with type 2.
I was not overweight, exercised regularly and had a very good diet. I was not put on any medication just told to change my diet!
A few months later I was rushed into hospital with a blood sugar reading of over 40 and Ketoacidosis. I was put on an insulin drip and, when discharged, have had to inject insulin daily.
I have today spoken to my GP as I am convinced that I am not type 2.
She dithered for ages saying that I was diagnosed as T2 but my body was reacting as T1 but, because of my age, it must be T2. In the end she said that I was T2 - insulin dependent!!!
I just don't know what to do now.

The Metformin will have done no harm. If he had very high blood sugar during the T2 'period' it won't have been ideal but unlikely to have done much harm. As he has found there is high level of ignorance amongst some GPs who still, wrongly, assume that T1 is a condition of the young. I had the same problem with two of my GPs
