My 16 year old forgot his, lantus on Friday morning but didn't actually remember until 7pm, as it was boxing day I decided to wait u til the next dose on Sat morning and monitor. He has taken all doses since. My question is should he still be running high nearly three days later I know it takes a few days for a change in dose to take effect is this the same for a missed dose. He is normally very good and well controlled. Today he sailed all morning and is normally battling lows after exercise but had a pre lunch reading of 16. Any advice gratefully received

If levels are above 12 the correction bolus may not work so effectively and a little more may be needed.

Also some people (like me) find that any exercise with levels above 12 actually pushes the person up even more.

Are his normal levels between 4 and 8?

Hi, I'm in the same boat, it's taking me longer than expected to get back to normal (my version of normal) I'm monitoring my blood sugars a lot and so far (about a week) im not there yet, but having Xmas I guess hasn't helped with all the food! Now I'm back to my normal regime, im hoping to be back on track before new year,

Some times I find a very strict few days help to kick start things back onto the right track

Extra food although bolusing for it can cause your basal/ bolus tegime to go adrift from 50/50 or 40/60 ratio's.. So if you are having say double the carbs for a day your bolus goes up accordingly but your basal is the same.... Just a tweak of an extra 1/2 unit of basal or so on occasions of more eating can help keep the ratios more in line and the bg's lower.

Its easier on a pump as you can easily adjust it to a temporary basal rate for an hour or 5 hours or 24 hrs etc.

The thing is though its all individual... All of us are different and we need to find ways to adjust insulins for special occasions.... And to remember to adjust them back too!!!
