Modified release metformin

I was diagnosed with T2 in August & put on metformin (building up to 2g per day). I recently had a telephone consult with the diabetes nurse to discuss my latest results (A1C down from 9.3 to 6.3) & I asked to try the modified release tablets due to side-effects. She gave me this but only put me on 1g a day. Is this right? I assumed I would stay on the same dose or she would at least have mentioned the reduction to me. I tried to get another phone consult with her but had no luck, I currently work away from home & wont be back for two months. Thanks

She could have made an error. Your Hba1c is down and maybe this means a less aggressive approach or your side effects are of concern. I would think the most likely of these three reasons is that since you were having side effects she has taken this into consideration.

I shouldn't worry too much about the reduced dose. You are still taking Metformin and I found it didn't make that much difference to my blood sugar levels. I am interested to know what it was that did so. Have you changed your diet at all?

I agree with Squire. It's the law of diminishing returns for Metformin i.e. doubling the dose doesn't have double the effect and the BS reduction is quite small anyway. Your HBA1C is now very good so I would stick with the 1gm. Which reminds me I must ask for mine to be reduced!

Thanks for your reply. On the advice of a diabetic friend I bought a meter & started testing before & after eating to see what foods I can tolerate. I also reduced my carb intake. Unfortunately I am a potato-lover but my blood sugar doesn't love them! My previous "healthy" diet of bran flakes, jacket potatoes with beans etc. has gone out of the window.
