More Control and how to achieve it

I have been diabetic for approx 3 yrs now and my overall control seems good during the daytime with Blood sugar readings within the normal ranges of 4 to 8. But my real issue is that my morning blood sugars are usually above 6.7 and its that which I could do with lowering.

My last HBa1c was 52 which is according the doctor at least good control. I aren't on any meds, apart from statins. My diet is good and I exercise on regular basis and have never been large at my peak I was only 12st 11lbs but now I am 10st 5lbs.

When I have spoken to the specialists they actually think I am a very unusual case and to be honest I have come to the same conclusion myself. Most of the advice seems to loaded towards obese people and not to folk like myself who are slim jims so to speak.

With regards meals, an example of what I have would be scrambled eggs with ham for breakfast, cooked chicken with veg for lunch then perhaps fish for tea. With few coffees and drinks inbetween, so as you can see I do try to stick to a decent diet.

I admit I like a drink at weekends, but you have to live your life. What I am really looking for is advice from people and perhaps to find someone who is in the same boat as me and what their experiences are.

My fasting BG only normalised after incorporating intermittent fasting into my Type 2 management. After nearly 4 years of always having high fasting, I'd begun to think a normal level was out of reach, yet now I'm almost always in the 5's unless I eat more than my usual 2 meals per day (usually within an 8 hour eating window). I'm eating more or less the same amount of calories that I previously ate spread over 3 meals and I'm not losing weight - just getting better BG levels.

Like @Indy51 my Fasting glucose range between 5-6 mmol after intermittent fasting. For me that is simply skipping a couple of dinner or have very light dinner. And have maintained that for over a year.

Just over the last couple of days I have managed to pushed it to around 4.5 mmol on a multiday fast with spoonfuls of virgin coconut oil and water...

Thanks for the advice. I can't really miss meals as I am skinny enough, I did try it and ended up losing a bit of weight something that I can't afford to do. I can change just need to make sure I have enough nutrients to keep me going otherwise I feel ill and faint

I think that besides loosing a lot, my mornings numbers got much lower as I started to excercise much more extencively like burning at least 1200 calories each time in the fitness center on top of weight training, maybe you can do that more aéasily than fasting and then just eat some more afterwards than I do, of the low carb kinds of cause

The only real issue I have is the high morning blood sugars. They are what I think are taking my overall HBA1C reading to 52. When I taking the readings through the day I am in the 'Normal range' of 4 to 8.

I have tried suggestions that I have found online but none seem to make a difference.

My doctor says that the statins could be pushing up the sugars slightly but he isn't worried. I have concerns but I really would like to get morning levels down somewhat.

Actually my experience is that I had no significant weightloss throughout my 1 year of low carb and intermittent fasting. I have stayed between 73-75kg. Perhaps it is because I am eating enough during my feeding cycles. I typically eat 150-200g of crispy roast pork belly for lunch every alternate day...Yes on weekend I may even go for buffet...but my fasting glucose stays around 5.5-6.0 mmol. Whenever it exceeds 6 mmol is when I skip dinner for the day. That brings it right back to < 6 mmol...

In the early days when my fasting glucose was 8-10 mmol. It took a few sessions of intermittent fasting, spread over a couple of weeks. eg 1st week 1 day of fasting, 2nd week 2 day of fasting...and by the 3rd week I was seeing "normal" numbers. But I think it depends on individuals how well each respond to fasting...

Also I now realize that taking a couple tablespoon of virgin coconut oil will help keep the brain fueled when the glucose levels drop sharply. That makes the fast easier if you are doing extended fast. But not so much for intermittent fast.

I was tempted to say that yesterday, but its against the forum rules ( I'm not a Dr) When you say you are slim, may I ask what your BMI is? I have a BMI of 22, I find that IF does not cause any further weight loss, I am just putting the same amount on 2 plates as I do on 3

Intermittent fasting need not mean reducing food quantities at all.
Many slim people fast extremely successfully, and do it for the other health benefits.
They just compress the same amount of food into shorter time periods, such as 2 larger meals instead of 3 smaller ones, or by having one big meal and a nutrition dense snack, so that all eating is compressed into a 4 or 8 hour window, with the rest of the time fasting.

Where there is a will, there is a way. :)

I have lunch at 11.30am and dinner is about 6.00pm Mon to Friday (this short fast period is easy as i'm at work). Saturday and Sunday is a full English at about 9.00am dinner at about 5.00pm. Rarely more than 50g of carbs per day unless I go to the pub for beers. I rarely snack and am rarely hungry unless its time to eat. FBS between 5 and 5.5 with HBA1c 34 consistently, i'm type 2 for many years with 2 metformin per day. I could ditch the metformin if I wanted.

My BMI is 20.5, I am 5ft 11lbs

My usual routine with food is for example

7am - Breakfast usually eggs, porridge or something like mackeral now and then full english
12pm - Lunchtime, consists of things like salad with beans, tuna / turkey or something with meat and veg
6pm - Dinner - say chicken curry with a dahl or onion bargi.

So what I gather I'd be better doing is to try having simply two meals rather than the 3

The low carb diet you mention in your first post would be fine.. the one you list above less so..I would say.
What are your bloods after the porridge?
Beans, dahl not so good either and onion bhaji could be dodgy too..
When I was diagnosed I stopped having breakfast, just a couple of mugs of tea and ate lunch at 1pm and then dinner at 7-8pm in the evening. This meant I was doing at least a 16 hour fast every day from previous nights dinner to lunch. If you think you could manage that it may help. That's what worked for me anyway.
