Type of diabetes
Type 1
Hi All,
I'm new to the forum, having heard about it at a Diabetes UK event on Saturday. I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes just over a year ago, aged 35, and wish I had known about the forum at that time - I had so many questions! The irony is that being a healthcare professional I had advised people for years on how to manage their diabetes, and soon found out that living with it is certainly not as simple or straightforward as the advice (and advisers) would suggest... :P
I am currently on lantus and novorapid, carb-counting, toying with the idea of having a pump but not too bothered about it.
I love biking, reading, crafting, travelling, music - often all at the same time, as much as possible!
I am keen to raise awareness of the different types of diabetes (Types 1 and 2), also the psychological impact both of the diagnosis and living with the condition.
And to have some fun along the way - we are all so much more than our diabetes!
I look forward to getting to know you.
Cheers,
Jen

Hi Jen!

Whats your profession?

I was on lantus and novorapid too, but now just using novorapid with a pump. Was diagnosed 16yrs ago aged 9years, 11months and 2 weeks.

I always like talking to medical professinals who have first hand experience of living with diabetes. Much as my first diabetes team were fantastic and really couldn't have asked for better, as you say, it's not as straightforward as some may thing.

My experience with having diabetes steered me into the direction of health care professional and am currently awaiting to start my adult nursing degree. I'm then planning on crossing over to childrens and being dual trained with the possiblilty of going onto specialising with diabetes. Unless of course I find something else more interesting :D I'm really into anatomy and physiology. How things work, why they don't work, how science then steps in. I trained as a health care cadet with the NHS Academy and I got a lot of great experience, including peering over a neuro surgeons shoulder whilst he operated on a 4 yr old childs head. It was fascinating!

A little off topic (again!) but welcome to the forum. :)

Hi Angelicus,

I'm a nurse, have done all sorts, now working in Governance for a community health provider service. I don't usually mention this, and certainly not at the beginning, however for me it was a cause of some considerable psychological distress on first being diagnosed, and was significant to me accepting (or not) the diagnosis. I went into honeymoon period after a month or two for a few months - this was totally unexpected (for me) and completely did my head in!

Good luck with the training - despite everything it's a good profession to be in, and if you have a passion for people and a love of science you'll be well away. When do you start the training?

Hi Beav, how's it going?
I use a solostar pen, too, have had no problems with it (other than forgetting to take it on a regular basis... ).
Have a good week,
Jen
