Hi all. Grateful for any thoughts.

I've been in the insulin resistance category for years, but following a bout of Covid (Probably incidental) my HbA1c hit 58, so formally I now have diabetes.

I've purchased a Freestyle Libre 2 so that I had some consistent data to work with. After a couple of weeks of trial and error I've been able to keep by glucose to around six with a rise up to 8.5 after eating, which drops back down to around 5.5 - 6.0 after eating. This mostly by avoiding all carbs and replacing them with veg as well as cutting out alcohol! I've lost a couple of Kilos as a result.

My main problem is the mornings. I usually wake up with a blood sugar around 7.5 from a night time sugar of 5-6. If I don't eat it heads up to 9.5 (I've tried intermittent fasting 8pm to 12am and this happens every time). If I have a low carb breakfast I end up going out of range anyway. This doesn't happen latter in the day. I know that there is a morning glucose phenomenon. Just wondered whether anyone else has found a solution?

Regards

Simon

The solution for me was to continue with low carb until I was fully in remission. The dawn phenonomen is the last thing to go, and I dropped my carb max a bit to resolve it.

My morning sugars are generally a little high and continue to rise unles I eat. I am doing carnivore for three months so I eat a bowl of ground beef and have some butter for breakfast. This absolutely keeps my sugars down.

Hi, I have just joined, and to be honest looking for info/tips as I need to control my diabetes better! I did find if I ate a little protein before bed usually a small handful of heathy nuts, helped with morning sugars.

Hi, when you say last to go, does it truly…..go? I’ve heard it takes a while.

I’m eating 15-25g of carbs per day with 500mg of Metformin daily and am ranging at 95-107 in the mornings. A1c is at 5.2 but I’m trying to get morning check lower to like 90ish.

I didn't bother with a solution because I don't think it's a problem. It seems to be an entirely natural thing given the number of people, diabetic and non-diabetic, who report this happening. If overall blood glucose is lowered, my rise starts at a lower point and tops out around 6.0. This is using up glycogen stores which is (for me at the minute) a good thing.

I normally don't eat until 1-2pm having not eaten since 7.30pm previous evening. On any given morning, I can stop my liver adding glucose (should I want to) by eating something - small piece of cheese, four almonds, bit of salami will all do it. Following day the same thing will happen.
